gday all, i am trying to find information on my great grandfather details below:
name: John Brown (doesn't quite sound Norwegian)
Birth: 5th August 1885, Fredrikstadt, Norway
Landed in Australia: 1906 on the Barque Hermes in Rockhampton, Queensland from Bristol England
Naturalised: 14th September 1915
Enlisted WW1: September 1915
Died: 9th October 1917, Belgium
his children born in Australia: John Brown, Alfred John Brown (my father named after), Frederick Brown
on his enlistment papers he has put that he served 3 years in the Navy USA
all the above information is from his enlistment/naturalisation papers...
many thanks for any help, really appreciate it, oh we will be over to Norway/Sweden June 2016, it would be great to find where he lived and if any living relatives.... |

Perhaps John, Johannes, Johan Brun.
Brun or Bruun, a common family-name in Norway and it means Brown

I also looked into the same church books and included Fredrikshald (Halden).
There is no candidate born August 5. 1885 in these parish`s or sub parish`s

There were farms named Fredrikstad in the 1900 census in following Counties; Hedmark, Akershus and Østfold and 1065 persons with lastname Brun/Bruun.

I also looked into some of the neighboring parishes. Nothing to report.
Here's Ingvar Leonard Jensen with birthdate 05 August 1886, in 1910 with a wife and houseful of children:

Wasn't John also called Jack? Could he be Jacob rather than Johan (and the John variants). Wouldn't change the fact of not finding a candidate born in Fredrikstad and environs on the correct birth date.
Why did he not marry the mother of his several children? Maybe he had already been married. Or maybe the family is not Lutheran and did not register the birth. By age 14 for the 1900 census he could already be a cabin boy or the like, at sea. Just thinking out loud why someone can't be found, despite telling his birth date and birth place. Or maybe the "Fredrikstad farm" idea is in play.
We also didn't find him registering with the US Navy.
Is it certain he departed for Australia from Bristol, England - or could that be Bristol, Rhode Island, USA.
He is an enigma. |

Per Kåre's observation that there a many fylke / parishes with farms named Fredrikstad. Farm names starting with fredrikst in which parishes in 1900:
