Hi

There is a boy born 5. aug. 1885 in Moss which is not far from Fredrikstad and Halden. He is a "dissenter", but his name is nowhere near John and nothing similar to Brown.

He was named Ernst Fredrik Hilditek(?), no 13

And he is in the norwegian 1910 census so not our man:

Why did he not marry the mother of his several children? Maybe he had already been married. Or maybe the family is not Lutheran and did not register the birth. By age 14 for the 1900 census he could already be a cabin boy or the like, at sea. Just thinking out loud why someone can't be found, despite telling his birth date and birth place. Or maybe the "Fredrikstad farm" idea is in play.

We also didn't find him registering with the US Navy.

Is it certain he departed for Australia from Bristol, England - or could that be Bristol, Rhode Island, USA.

gday, many thanks for everyones efforts, not sure why he did not marry, the wife of his children she was charged with bigamy some time after his death.

the Barque "hermes" i have as arriving in australia from Bristol England from newspaper article..

The Lutheran church in Norway is the "state" church. If you had a different faith you were considered a dissenter.

So she was married to someone sometime along the line if bigamy is the same in Australia as in America.

Have you got the birth records of each of the children? Some experience on this site with Australian birth records indicates information about each parent might iterated in a different & illuminating way. That's the hope anyway.

In Australia what occupation did John follow?

Did Australia WWI soldiers have to have wills as the British did?

Okay, so 3 looks at the basic data of John Brown in Australia has not found resonance in the records in Norway.

There is no birth / baptism record for a John Brown in either of the two Fredrikstad parishes with the birth occurring on 5 Aug 1885. This transcends considerations of the name since there are no male births recorded for that date in Fredrikstad.

So now the search is to find what fits and what doesn't
