Hi

Here is a candidate for John Brown. He has correct date of birth, but one year wrong. He is named Brun in the 1900 census and is a sailor. He is born in Oslo, but his father is from Enebakk which is not so very far from Fredrikstad.

What do you think? I'll try to find more information about him. Below is what I have found:

5. august 1884 a boy was born in Oslo and baptized Johan Alfred. (Didn't John Brown have a son named Alfred?)
His parents were Nils Kristiansen and Cecilie Jakobsen.
In the 1900 census for Norway the surname Brun is added to his name.
He is a sailor, but in jail. (Name her Johan Adolf, but I think it is the same man)

Permanent sidelenke: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=5807&idx_id=5807&uid=ny&idx_side=-104

One of the witnesses is named Brun and the note say something about a certificate to the prosecutor.

He has wrong birtdate and year, but correct name.

Apparently John Adolf Kristiansen and his parents & siblings sometimes used Brun and sometimes used Kristiansen or other patronyms. Here is the father and his family in the 1865 census:

Alette Laura Brun in 1910, she's a widow:

Maybe there's a dødfallsprotokol for Johan Fredrik in Oslo?

There is a big note attached to Ole Hjalmer's baptismal record with a date of Oct 1897 and wasn't that the same date on Johan Adolf's note?

Here is another long shot family that I have tried to follow. It started with this baptism record from Ancestry.com. The birth year is off by two years and he was born in Oslo not Fredrikstad but?

Fredrik Johan Brun
in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927
Name: Fredrik Johan Brun
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 3 mai 1887 (3 May 1887)
Baptism Date: 8 mai 1887 (8 May 1887)
Baptism Place: Oslo, Oslo, Norway
Father: Fredrik Meltzer Brun
Mother: Anna Holm
FHL Film Number: 1282971
Reference ID: Bk 1

Did not find him or his famly in 1900 Census but this must be his father in the 1910 Cenus.

http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/ft/person/pf01036708010460

In 1875 father was living with his family in Oslo ie Kristiania.

Hi

Johan Fredrik Kristiansen Brun; the father of Johan Adolf Kristiansen Brun b. 1884, died 5. nov. 1910.
He left wife and 6 children behind.
In "Dødsfallprotokollen" it is written that 4 of the children lived "here" (probably in or near Oslo) and 2 lived in Amerika.

The first child of John Brown was born early 1909 so this is most likely not the correct norwegian connection.

That would depend on how well the family communicated, since John Brown in Australia claimed a 3 year service in America presumably before 1906. Maybe they weren't quite up to date in 1910? Could we figure out which 2 of the children were in US?

The 1885 census :
001 00 Johan F. Christijansen 1849 Kristiania Brygarbeider
002 00 Laura Christijansen 1852 Kristiania
003 00 Albertine Fredriksen 1872 Kristiania
004 00 Karl Fredriksen 1873 Kristiania
005 00 Agsel Fredriksen 1875 Kristiania
006 00 Valborg Fredriksen 1877 Kristiania
007 00 Jalmar Fredriksen 1882 Kristiania
008 00 Adolf Fredriksen 1884 Kristiania

Hi

You might have a point there.

When the mother Allette dies 25. aug. 1918 it is written in "Dødsfallprotokollen" that she leaves 4 children behind - one of them lives in Denmark.
Since her husband died nov 1910 two of their children have died.
(John Brown died in this period if I remember correct.)

No 1144:

So one child known to be alive and on both lists (those 6 in 1910, and those 4 in 1918) is Valborg Meyer. Interestingly, her husband was from Denmark and they had a largish family of mostly boys.

Hi

I have found 9 children born to Johan Fredrik and Allette Kristiansen Brun:

Albertine Fredrikke born 1872 - alive dec. 1910
Carl Martinius born 1874 - ?
Aksel born 1876 - alive dec. 1910
Valborg born 1877/9 - alive dec. 1910 and aug. 1918
Ole Hjalmar born 1882 - living in 1900
Johan Adolf born 1884 - living in 1900
Einar Kristian born 1 dec. 1885, died 15 march 1886
Hulda Konstanse born 29 feb. 1887, died 9. jan. 1888

Sailors are not listed in the 1910 census (only a few that are listed with their family).
