My grandfather was born in Norway and came to Canada as a child. He served in the Great War but his history prior to immigration is lost. Any suggesting or help on a genealogy starting point?

Maybe you could provide a little more information on your Oskar such as is he found in in a census in Canada or where did he live in Canada.

As Kċre found there are not a lot of Oacar or Oskar Torgersens in Norway around 1900 with a birth year of around 1899. Here is a birth record for one of the sisters of the Oscar that Kċre found. This gives both the mothers maiden name and the name of the father.

Dagny Elfrida Karola Torgersen
in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927
Name: Dagny Elfrida Karola Torgersen
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 22 apr 1891
Baptism Date: 14 jun 1891
Baptism Place: Oslo, Oslo, Norway
Father: Karl Edvin Torgersen
Mother: Gina Karoline Gulbrandsen
FHL Film Number: 1282970
Reference ID: Bk 1 Pg 80

Here's a link, if all goes well, to an Oscar Milvin Torgerson who served in CEF in World War I. If this is your ancestor, he was born in Wisconsin in 1896:

http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/first-world-war/personnel-records/Pages/item.aspx?IdNumber=278477

I guess we'll have to have more information from OP to know who is Oscar Torgerson.

Here Oscar Melvin Torgerson's birth year given as 1898:

Thank you very much for the info everyone! I know that my grandfather was buried in Chelan Saskatchewan so I believe the middle name Melvin is correct and the birth year of 1898. My oldest uncle told me that some of his fathers siblings were born in Norway and others were born in the US. I understand there were at least four brothers and maybe two sisters and Alfred was one of them. It is possible I suppose that the military records showing a birth date of 1896 might have been an attempt to volunteer for service at a younger age if it were the same man, although the middle name was incorrect as well.

The surname Torgersen is possibly the same family as I have some relatives in WIsconsin who spell their name with an EN……..I think the older siblings came over to the US first, then back to Norway and finally some to Canada, but not sure if it was from the US or directly from Norway.

Here is an Oscar Torgerson in the 1921 Canadian Census living in Hazel Dell Sk. I wonder if you can say if this is your relative or not. He arrived in Canada in 1908. He is listed a being single so would have had to have been married in Canada. He is living with the family of Christian and Mathilda Moe.

There seems to be a connection between the children of Anton and Hannah M Torgerson of La Crosse and Christian Moe. Perhaps after Anton died Hannah Mathilda married Christian Moe. and this is that blended family in the 1905 Wisconsin Census.

It would appear that the ones that came from Norway are the parents Anton Torgerson and his wife Hannah Mathilda and her second husband Christian. Question now is from where in Norway.

Great job on the marriage Jane. So here is the groom and also the bride. So we now know her maiden name.

Hannah M Larson
in the Wisconsin, Marriage Index, 1820-1907
Name: Hannah M Larson
Marriage Date: 30 Sep 1882
Marriage Place: La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA
Volume: 03
Page: 0147

A family tree gives her parents names as

Lars Larsen and Nicoline Hansdatter.

That remains to be proved.

This is likely the family that appears in the family tree, however I do not see a Hannah Mathilda born abt 1864. Tilda would seem to be too young. Unless her age is off in the census by four years or more.

Name: Lars Larson
Age: 42
Birth Year: abt 1838
Birthplace: Norway
Home in 1880: Hamilton, La Crosse, Wisconsin

Gender: Male

Nice.

The info on this tree has Hannah Mathilde as a first-born of Nicoline, father unknown
http://www.legacyfamilytree.ca/Anderson/972.htm

Tree says this Oscar married Stella Panasiuk. The tree includes some children for them.

Nice tree, goes back a long ways in time, maybe fairly accurate although the Norwegian geography needs some work. This is likely the parents of Nicoline in the 1865 Norwegian Census, although Nicoline seems to be gone from home by then.

Likely candidate for Nicoline still in Oppland

Baptism record for Nicoline born Jan 1, 1845, See number 11

Perhaps Nicoline leaving, daughter is 3 and named Anne, needs more work.
