Jens E. Stedje was my great grandfather. I believe he was born around 1872 in the Sogndal area. He came to the USA and enlisted in the US Army. Was stationed in the Philippines during the Philippine American War in the late 1890s. Married Lucia Detera in the Philippines and had one daughter. Jens attained rank of Lt. Colonel. I have a photo of a man I believe is Jens, but would like to find other relatives who can confirm his identity. Thank you. D. Richardson |

Here is a farily good candidate for you. Father is Erik Johannsen and mother is Dorthe Jensdatter. Birth date is 23 Oct 1872.
See number 93 at this link.

Ancestryi.com transcribes him with the last name of his father and not the correct patronymic name of Ericksen. But the data seem match the Digitalarkivet data.

Did he move back to Norway ca 1920-25? Jens E. Stedje is on a photo with his medals, info from Digital Museum tells he served in the US army where he was promoted to colonel. He settled down in "Møllarheimen" The millers house in Sogndal where he died 1934 link

Here is the linik.

There is conflicting information on his death. The Geni.com has him dying in Arkansas and other trees have him dying in 1934 in Long Island, NY. |

It looks like the Manager of the Geni.com site for Erik Johanssen Stedje and Dorthe Jensdatter Stemagrim is a direct descendant. So you can contact him by signing up for Geni.com and sending him an e-mail.
His name is Bjørn Erik Pedersen His mother is Ingrid Stedje Pedersen Her father is Eirik Stedje His father is Erik Eirikson Stedje Who is a brother to your Jens Stedje
Making you two, second cousins, I think. |

This portrait is said to be of "Jens Stedje" - colonel in the American Army. But: It says he moved home to Sogndal in 1920-25, and live at "Møllarheimen" until he died in 1934. A namesake of your great grandfather? |

To jwiborg: I have no photos of my great grandfather from my family- only photos I have found during my genealogy research. However, he attained the rank of Lt. Colonel and as far as I know, he died in 1943. So this corresponds to what we know. 1934 is the date on the tombstone we found in Arlington National Cemetery in the US. Thank you for the photo! This is one I have not seen! Do you know if/how I could obtain a copy of the photos along with any documentation about it? |

This record would indicate that your Jens Stedje is buried in Arlington National Cemetariy. The transcribed name is misspelled as the original record lists his name as Jens Stedje.
Jens E Steije in the U.S. National Cemetery Interment Control Forms, 1928-1962 Name: Jens E Steije Death Date: 22 Mar 1934 Cemetery: Arlington National Cemetery Burial Location: Arlington, Virginia |
