Hi, I was just wondering if someone could help me find some information on my ancestors from Norway. I believe they came from Telemarken and possibly from Kviteseid. The oldest information I have is around the very late 1700's to the mid 1800's. His name was Aslak Langlie. They settled in northern Minnesota in the late 1800's from what I gather. I was kind of looking for some family symbols or coat of arms. Any information would be great. Thanks for all of the help.

You start with information here in US. Here is an Aslak Langlie from northern Minnesota in 1910. His birth year is about 1864 and year of migration is recorded as 1878.

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M2LB-WVP

There also is a family tree at familysearch, perhaps someone else has done some research on the family.

This is likely the baptism of Aslak Høyesen or Høysen or Hoie all probably the same name. Must have been born just before the Census in 1801.

Aslak Hoie
in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927
Name: Aslak Hoie
Gender: Male
Baptism Date: 25 mai 1800 (25 May 1800)
Baptism Place: , Kviteseid, Telemark, Norway
Father: Hoye Tovsen
Mother: Christence Knudsdr
FHL Film Number: 126954

When you get this far back in time, you usually can find a Family Tree on Geni.com that covers the family. You need to evaluate the accuracy of the data for yourself to validate the Tree since the Tree goes back to 1485 or so.

Here is one for Høye Tovsson Langlid father of the Aslak shown above.

The names of Hølje or some version of that or Tov seem to extend back a long ways in the Langlid farm family. Here are two twin children probaby born to Tov Høljesen who lived either at Langlid or Midtbøen or both. From Ancestry.com.

Name: Tov Höljesen
Gender: Male
Baptism Date: 19 okt 1724 (19 Oct 1724)
Baptism Place: Tinn, Telemark, Norway
Name Note: twin
Father: Hölje Tovssön
FHL Film Number: 127045
Reference ID: Book1 p39

Name: Sönnöf Höljesdatter
[Sönnöf Tovssön]
Gender: Female
Baptism Date: 19 okt 1724 (19 Oct 1724)
Baptism Place: Tinn, Telemark, Norway
Name Note: twin
Father: Hölje Tovssön
FHL Film Number: 127045
Reference ID: Book1 p39

Here are the baptism records from Digitalarkvet. Not the easiest too read but look at the third entry from the bottom left page. The two underlined names are Tov and Sönnöf.

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=7935&idx_id=7935&uid=ny&idx_side=-41

Here is the Geni.com page for Tov, no mention is made of the twin sibling. Also the birth is given as 1723, a little off and the last name is spelled differently. Some things to keep in mind.

Hølje, a rare name today, was used as first name in parts of Telemark and Buskerud as a local variant for Helge.
