Rangdi Gulbrandsdatter 1866
Would 1866 be birth, and could rangdi be spelled or changed to Randi . I'm thinking I may have a family link to this chest. My vision is low. Takes me longer to study.

Yes, Rangdi and Randi is the same female name, and the 1866 inscription most likely refer to her birth. Would you need help to locate her origin? |

I just want to say: May you always be richly blessed for this kindness! Somewhere out there is a small spinning wheel that was promised to me by my grandma, a USA-born daughter of a Norwegian who came here as a boy in 1866. The wheel came on the voyage with the boy's mother. It has his name and the year of passage carved into the side of the table. The family story was that his mother had him do it to keep him occupied on the voyage. The wheel was "misdirected" by another relative. Every time I read a story about folks doing what you are doing, my heart is deeply, deeply touched. Wishing you all the best in helping this chest find its rightful home! |

That would make me sad, knowing my grandmother wanted me to have it. I hope some day it finds its way to you. |

With so little information, it will be hard to find any bulletproof infomation. No farmname, no information about where she lived, when she immigrated etc.
I did a quick check for possible candiates in the Minnesota 1900-census, and there are quite a few. Some candidates could be removed though...

Maybe you can contact the auctioneer Kevin Swanson to get more history about the trunk? You should try to trace the trunk back to the owner. Only based on a common lastname, I do not think that she would be related to your gg Guri Gulbrandsdatter. |

Original Poster, Okay so what about your supposed family connection? What's your ancestry?
The owners seem to have a lot of "antique-y" stuff, their name is at the bottom of the poster Harry & Corella Hamre.
Here is her obituary. Interesting she was a member of Valdres Samband a heritage society for people whose ancestors were from Valdres in Norway....

Jcarrier has a topic about Albert Oliver Lee Birth Date: 20 Dec 1850 Death Date: 25 Oct 1920 Death Place: Crookston, Polk County, Minnesota, USA Lived in Wisconsin - Minnesota. Married Lorentina Krogness born 1855
In Norway he was Olaus Andreasen, and with a mother named Guri Guldbrandsdatter Birth Date: 20 Dec 1850, Vestre Toten, Oppland, Norway Parents: Andreas Olsen & Guri Guldbrandsdatter
Guri Guldbrandsdatter is a generation older than Rangdi, and I havent seen any by that name in her family. Although the spelling Rangdi is used in Oppland.
Despite no family relations to Guri Guldbrandsdatter, it would be interesting to find out who "Rangdi Gulbrandsdatter 1866" was. But I think we need more info. Info that the previous owner of the trunk could provide. |

Randina Hamre, (daughter of Halvor Loftsgaarden) was born Rangdi, 26 Aug 1886, in Wang township, Renville County, Minnesota.
Halvor Loftsgaarden was a hard nut to crack, but I found him eventually. He is from Loftsgaarden farm in Mo, Telemark. #14 Halvor Loftsgaarden Born 02 Feb 1850 Parents: Olaf Torjuson & Gunild Knudsdatter, Loftsgaarden in Mo. |

The name Rangdi/Randi is not used at all in Mo, Telemark, so it's not from Halvors family. But the name is very common in Vang, Oppland. |

In the Ancestry Canadian passenger list database there are these people coming into Canada: Joster Tostenson Kjersten Randi Kjersten Gjorand Kjersten Kari Kjersten Anna Kjersten and Ole Kjersten, and Ingeborg Kjersten
In the 1880 census Randi is widowed and living in Hartland twp, Worth county, Iowa. The daughter Anna is on the next page after Randi. Anna married a man named Ellingboe and in the 1900 census she says she came to US in 1867 (differs from Julia / Jorund's date of 1869)
1880 Census for Randi Kjarsten: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MDLR-RYN
If someone who has access to Ancestry could look at the passenger list at least it'd be known when Rangdi arrived in North America... |

Regarding Ellingboe: The link for Halvor Loftsgaarden above mention in a note that he was once referred to as Halvor Ellingboe.
The farm Ellingbø is in Vang, Oppland. |
