I think that Jan Peter has nailed Randine for me. The fact that she and daughter left for America without a man, probably means she married Conrad in Canton and that she likely knew somebody in South Dakota. So now I guess we work on Conrad.

Here is a person who pops up, living in Minnesota close to Mpls. Gunner K Bye. Here is that K again. Also he named one of his sons Conrad.

Name: Gunder K . Bye
Birth Date: Jul 1851
Birth Place: Norway
Death Date: 10 Jul 1925
Death Place: Dakota County, Minnesota, USA
Cemetery: Ravenna Cemetery
Burial or Cremation Place: Dakota County, Minnesota, USA
Has Bio?: N
Spouse: Caroline Amelia Bye
Children: John Arthur Bye
Conrad Christian Bye

I was thinking more along the lines of naming a son after an uncle or ohter relative. Sorry I was so obtuse.

Well, okay. It's your topic. Here is a link to the transcribed version of Gunder Bye's death, parents are named Christ Olson and Mary Christianson:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FDQ7-3C6

Here is Gunder & family in 1900 US census, says he came to US in 1881:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M9SQ-8PB

Here is a link to the transcribed death record of Carolina (Lena) Amelia Swenson (or Olson) wife of Gunder. Her father is Ole Swenson. Her year of migration from various censuses 1881 or 1888:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FDDX-N72

Not sure if this marriage in the ELCA database is their's or not since there are a number of ripples:
Gunder Christensen Bye & Amalia Johanneson (no parents are named, nor ages given) in St. Paul Minnesota, no church named
11 Nov 1881

Here is an interesting development also from Chronicling America in the Dakota Farmers' Leader published at Canton S.D. on 10 Nov 1898, pg 8, col 2:

"C.K. Bye informs the LEADER that in the future his name will be written as above and not Conrad Knutson as he is familiarly known. Mr. Bye is prepared to do all kinds of papering and decorating."

from the same newspaper, publish 24 Sept 1897:
"Conrad Knutson is reported to have fallen heir to $7,240. We hope this report is correct."

Interesting, I hope he made good use of the money.

Also giving this some thought. With the informatin that Jan Peter provided, I am also now very interested in the real father of Lovise Christina, Emil Edvardsen Svorstad(?) b.1852. since he is the biological father and thus his ancestry is now the family tree.

Jan Peter is his birth year 1858 or 1852?

Well, I'd be more interested in who died and left the money to him.

Here is a Konrad Knudsen heading to Canton who is also a painter:

When Conrad left Holt he was listed as enkemand. Here is his marriage #3

Good work!
My gut feeling is is that this is the correct one:

Census-1900 says he is born in May, and this old topic wich could be about the same person says May 16 as a possible date.

Well, there are a lot of things to like about him: use of both Knudsen and Christianson, painting connection, birthdate is 16 May 1857, leaving Norway in 1884 and a connection to a Bye farm (Storbye in Enebak.)

Sorry, I had the birthyear mixed for them. I think it reads 1853 for Emil?
His father should be named "Edvard", and I think his mother must be "Christine".

A wild shot
Not likely. In 1865 he is named Emil Christian Franklin Bøhm (13), and a myheritage website says he married Fredrikke Mathea Svendsen, that he had a son Johannes born 1881, and that he died in 1883.

Tough time finding any trace of Emil Edvardsen. Here is a candidate from the 1910 census. Lists him as having been born in Hønefoss howeve and not Kristiania.

http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/ft/person/pf01036457002745

and him in the 1900 Census

http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/ft/person/pf01037110002486

The marriage of Emil Martinus Edvardsen to Kristiana Antonsdatter in 1884 Fathers are Edvard Helgesen? and Anton Christiansen. See number 7

Son Erling Kornelius born in 1896 to Emil Edvardsen. mentions Lageshagen farm.

Maybe the father of Emil in the 1900 Census on Lageshaugen farm.
