I'm trying to locate living relatives in Norway, and can only trace them until the late 1800's in Strandebarm. My great grandfather was Kristoffer Olsen Rise born April 6th, 1886. Kristoffer had 3 sisters and 5 brothers the best I can tell. His brothers were Lars, Hans, Torger, Engel, and Ole if my information is correct. Also for water reason Kristoffer changed his name to Christ O. Rice after immigrating?

I was also wondering if anyone knows how to get a map of farm/property numbers. It looks like they lived at Residence 39, Farm No. 48, Property No. 4 during the census I found this information on. Any help would be great!

Are we not all mere remnants of great travellers and vikings.

The name was also spelled Risa.

The location of Rise in Strandebarm.

Today spelled Risa.

Farmnumbers have changed after Strandebarm joined with parts of Varaldsøy, Jondal and Kvam into the new Kvam municipality, so I can't tell by hand if this is 48/4. The circled house has 123/4, and the main Risa farm to the left is 123/1.
But Kristoffer Olsen Rise lived for sure in a house located within this picture. The buildings might not exist today though.

The bygdebok for Strandebarm, "Strandebarm og Varaldsøy i gamal og ny tid" was published in 1947 and possibly a second edition published in 1981. Have you exhausted the information in those volumes already? There's a good chance they could bring your information closer to the present time for the family members and/or those who lived on the 'Rise' farm there.

The 1900 census for the family living on a farm named Rise -

1910 censuses for the various Rise farms in Strandebarm -
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1910&knr=1226&kenr=002&bnr=0035&lnr=00
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1910&knr=1226&kenr=002&bnr=0037&lnr=00
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1910&knr=1226&kenr=002&bnr=0038&lnr=00
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1910&knr=1226&kenr=002&bnr=0039&lnr=00
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1910&knr=1226&kenr=002&bnr=0041&lnr=00

You don't specify which census you already checked. That would be helpful to others.

In the 1950's, a woman named Klara O. Rise owned the property 48/4.
In 1951, she sold part of the property to "Harald O. Rise"-
In 1952, she sold another part of it to Teodor Rise, and a 3rd part to Oddmund B. Kolltveit.
In 1956, she sold another part of it to Albert Kolltveit.
In 1962, she sold what was left of 48/4 to Edvin Rise.

Here is address and phone no. to Edvin Rise, who is in his 80's. He could be a son of Klara.
Map of his address shows the correct location:

This should then be the location of 48/4. Todays address: Grøningsvegen 26, 5630 Strandebarm. The nearby properties is probably what Klara sold out.

I'm curious what the reason would be for looking for living relatives still in that area.

I'm trying to make plans to visit Norway after my kids are out of school. I think it would be pretty cool to see where my family lived and farmed whether they're still in that area or not. Thank you for all the attachments and information you are all really great! I still have a lot to discover and appreciate any help!

Thank you for explaining. I've encountered distant relatives while researching my family history when it turned out we were both 'digging' in the same records for the same persons and/or farms. This has always happened for me entirely by accident and never by design.

I'm having a bit of trouble translating some of the occupations listed on the census, has anyone found a solid means of interpreting these to English?
