In the book "Forsandboka - Gards- og Ættesoge - Band I - Del II" by Sigleif Engen (pub. 1981) you will find the history of the Lyse farm and it's subfarms, information about the family history of the persons who farmed there, and photographs of some of the family members.
Page 673 specifically mentions the out of wedlock son of Inger Ingebretsdtr. "Inger har Edvard Nilsson (Lyse). (1874 23/1 -- ). med Nils Nilsson Henjum. «unkar og skolelærer» i Lyse. Edvard var tvillingbror til ein som ikkje livde opp."
He would most likely have been born on a subfarm of the Lyse farm which was detailed in the book as "Frauå - Nedlaagt plass under Lyse", where his paternal grandparents farmed at that time and I believe there is a photograph of that couple on those pages.
The Forsandboka volumes are available by Inter-Library Loan in the US. I borrowed them myself that way a number of years ago.
Edvard was a twin to one that did not live up. (He/she probably died before Edvard was christened since only he was mentioned)

Following up on the list of finds for Nils Henjum posted by JaneC on page 2, there is a Nils Henjum born Mar 1, 1850 who is referenced along with a Gunhild in 1899 in Fairbault County. It makes no sense that the trascription lists a death year and burial date for him. . The page lists both of them as having been born in Sogn, Norge. The record appears to be a list of church members and date when they were admitted ie 28 Dec 1899. The list also includes the three children, Selma, Clara and Nora along with their birth dates and location ie Minnehaha South Dakota along with the name Mrs Overbo next to the name of Selma.
Nils Henjum in the U.S., Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, Records, 1875-1940 Name: Nils Henjum Event Type: Burial Birth Date: 1 Mar 1850 Death Date: abt 1899 Burial Date: 28 Dec 1899 Church Name: Blue Earth Lutheran Church Church Location: Dell, Minnesota

This is likely that Nils Henjum in the 1900 US Census.
Ned Henjam in the 1900 United States Federal Census me: Ned Henjam [Nels Henjum] [Ned Henjum] Age: 50 Birth Date: Mar 1850 Birthplace: Norway Home in 1900: Rome, Faribault, Minnesota Race: White Gender: Male Immigration Year: 1874 Relation to Head of House: Head Marital Status: Married Spouse's Name: Gunhild Henjam Marriage Year: 1879 Years Married: 21 Father's Birthplace: Norway Mother's Birthplace: Norway Occupation: View on Image Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Ned Henjam 50 Gunhild Henjam 45 Selena O Henjam 19 Clara B Henjam 18 Nora G Henjam 12
There is another Nels Henjum listed in the 1900 US Census, born Mar 1849 and living in Minnehaha County South Dakota, married to a Joneta and listed as having six children.
It looks like some of the Family Trees on Ancestry.com have mixed data from the two men.

There is no farm (at least in the online available databases) named Henjum in Høgstad / Forsand. However, there is a farm named Hengene. Perhaps the pastor meant someone from that farm?
We don't know where Inger was every single moment between 1865 and 1875. Perhaps she was working out in Leikanger in Sogn and Fjordane and met a Nils Nilsen there and then came home to have her baby?
It might be possible that Nils Nilsen Henjum who left Norway in 1866 came back to Norway for a short period of time but such a trip would have to be documented.

The several books of the Forsandboka MIGHT have a section or areas which discuss the schools and/or teachers who have served there, I don't know. From what I saw I felt that he was a bachelor and teacher from elsewhere who was in the Lysefjorden area. |
