Wow! There are a lot of leads here to look into. This is fantastic.

Jane, sorry I'm not sure how to do the quotes in a post on my iPad, I actually have two sources for Edward's birth date. The first is the Naturalization Record index card and the second is his Social Security death index card.

I am going to talk to my Grampa here is just a bit and will see if he can help any more.

Thanks again!

Edward Nilsen's birthdate also recorded in WWI draft registration as 23 Jan 1874:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KZ8L-DXD

Here is an Edward Nelsen's arrival in New Orleans1905-1906 from Honduras, married, employed as engineer, it also says he had arrived in New Orleans in 1904:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-95C8-CZR?mode=g&i=400&wc=MFVV-PWL%3A1029673701%2C1029674901%3Fcc%3D1916009&cc=1916009 and here :https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:27F3-MYV

Another intriging arrival in New York for an Edward Nilsen whose last address was New Orleans in 1919:

Edward Nilsen
New York Passenger Arrival Lists (Ellis Island)
Given Name Edward
Surname Nilsen
Last Place of Residence New Orleans, USA
Event Date 17 Nov 1919
Age 44y
Nationality English
Departure Port West Africa
Arrival Port New York

Interesting this Edward Nilsen became a US citizen in a US Court 17 November 1905 only a few days off target Edward Nilsen.

Nice finds!

Niels Nielsen Henjum family in Minnesota has a son Niels b March 1849, but don't think he's father of Edvard.
Another try here, on Henjum in Leikanger, Sign og Fjordane, in 1865 census, with son Niels b 1850:

Yes, that's why I noted them as not possible. The other Nils Nielsen Henjum - born 1850 - is in the 1865 census I posted.

The son Lasse in the 1865 family became a teacher

In the book "Forsandboka - Gards- og Ættesoge - Band I - Del II" by Sigleif Engen (pub. 1981) you will find the history of the Lyse farm and it's subfarms, information about the family history of the persons who farmed there, and photographs of some of the family members.

Page 673 specifically mentions the out of wedlock son of Inger Ingebretsdtr.
"Inger har Edvard Nilsson (Lyse). (1874 23/1 -- ). med Nils Nilsson Henjum. «unkar og skolelærer» i Lyse. Edvard var tvillingbror til ein som ikkje livde opp."

He would most likely have been born on a subfarm of the Lyse farm which was detailed in the book as "Frauå - Nedlaagt plass under Lyse", where his paternal grandparents farmed at that time and I believe there is a photograph of that couple on those pages.

The Forsandboka volumes are available by Inter-Library Loan in the US. I borrowed them myself that way a number of years ago.

Edvards mother, Inger Ingebretsdatter (Ingebrigtsdatter) , was born May 6 1849 (not March 6 as given in her later marriage), see #23.
Her father was Ingebrigt Christophersen, Aadneshoug.
