I am looking for information about the heritage of Olaf Frederick Olsen, born in May of 1850 in Tonsberg, and died 7/12/38 in Minneapolis, MN.Wife Anna Marie Lampe (married 5/5/1872, Tonsberg). Eight children: Olaf Frederick Jr, (b 1873), Axel (b.1876), Hildegard (b.1877), Signa Charlotte (b.1879), Maria (b.1882), Harold (b.1884), Mattie (b.1886), Ralph (b.1890). In Minneapolis, he started the Olsen Fish Company.

I do not know when he came to the US, probably between 1886-1890 as his last child was born in MN.

Family story has it that Olaf was a wealthy man in Tonsberg, having three businesses:a lumberyard, a big ship, and a boys school. But the lumberyard burned, and the ship sank, and the school also failed. So Olav came to the US alone to work at a lumber camp in Iowa, as a timekeeper (?). In 1886, his wife Anna Marie auctioned off all the family belongings in Tonsberg ("big house on a hill with French wallpaper, grand piano..") and came to the US via Boston, taking a train to Minneapolis. He didn't know she was coming. (They had friends named Rasmussen in Minneapolis; she stayed with them.) She sent for him, he came.

Next week I am traveling to Norway and visiting Tonsberg. I would like to know anything about Olaf's or Anna Marie's ancestry.

Thanks for any help.

Thanks so much, Jane C; this is a start! The first confirmation that the family is actually from Tonsberg. Do you know how to interpret the address, could one find out what it might be equivalent to now? Thanks again.

As a start for Anne Marie, probably this is Anne Marie in 1865 census as a foster child:

That's interesting! Looks like she was raised by the Nilsen family. That explains why my family always said that something vague about not knowing her last name for certain, and that her family couldn't be traced.

I am looking for information about the heritage of Olaf Frederick Olsen, born in May of 1850 in Tonsberg

Very likely candidate is Ole Frederik born May 13 1850, see #40.
His parents were blacksmith Johan Olavus Frederiksen and Hanna Birgitte Schrøder.
(Olaf Frederick Olsen should according to Norwegian naming practice have been Ole Frederik Johansen.)

Olaf Fredrick Olsen's death record should name his parents and list his full birth date.. Available from Minnesota Historical Society in St. Paul.

Looking for emigration of Olaf Fredrick Olsen, and searching for any man named Ol* Ol* with heimstad Tønsberg, departing any year, nets one likely candidate on the database where emigration of Anne Marie "Maren" and children was found. He was Olaf Olsen, age about 37, occupation Handelsmd leaving Oslo 24 June 1887 on the Rollo, destination Chicago: link

I think "handelsmand" translates as "trader." In 1885, Olaf Fredrick's occupation is "agent."

.
This is probably your Olaf Fredrick Olsen in 1865. link

Occupation of 16-year-old Oluf, above, is "Handelslærling." The "lærling" part means student (apprentice).

.
Olaf, Marie, and children in 1875 census
link

The 1875 census lists Olaf's occupation as "Kjøbmand and Skibsreder."
