Indexed and transcribed records are always useful but one should also look at the actual original to see if you agree or not with the interpretation of the record.

As far as I know, there is no Norwegian name which is spelled Mashel. The most common closest to Mashel is Massie, Massaline, Massa.

Without having seen the original and probably handwritten record, my suspicion would be that the interpretation is faulty.

Well Joseph would have been 18 or thereabouts when Carl died, so a young man when that happened.

Karl Hansen, known as Charles Hanson in the Rockford, Illinois, City Directory, was still alive in 1907. The address is 1529 15th. However in the 1908 version Matea, known as Martha then is listed as a widow. This address is the same as the whole family lived in, in the 1910 Census.

Name: Charles Hanson
Gender: Female
Residence Year: 1907
Street address: 1529 15th
Residence Place: Rockford, Illinois, USA
Occupation: Nattern

This is possibly the death of Karl Hansen

Carl Hanson

It may be just a coincidence but Sverre is confirmed in Vestre Bærum in 1903 See number 25

From Rockford Republic, Friday 10 June 1910, pg 1:

"Carl and Olaf Hansen, aged 23 and 21 respectively , sons of Mrs. Martha Hansen, 1529 15th St are in county jail at Logan, Iowa awaiting trial on the charge of breaking into freight cars....One of the Hansen brothers is married and his wife resides here as well."

Other accounts in Rockford papers give other details. For instance there is a longish story about a letter written in Norwegian from Carl Johnson (originally both Carl and Olaf were id'ed as Johnson) in jail to Mrs. Birgitta Jannsen who lives at 1529 15th St also asking her to inform his wife of his whereabouts and to let her know that she should come to him and that he has stashed a trunk at a certain address at Stoughton, Wisc. the contents of which only she and he should view. Sheriff Barden of Logan intercepted the letter and had it translated so the big secret was about out and deputies were dispatched to retrieve the trunk.

In another article about what transpired before the breaking in of freight cars, still in Rockford the Hansen brothers were wanted for robbery of tools from a Rockford firm which they sold to others for cash Also at the same time the two brothers got jewelry from another Rockford firm by deception pretending to be two of their younger brothers, Joseph and Vilon Hansen.

So which of the boys are these?
