I am trying to find a record of Hans Skjonsberg when he emigrated from Norway to the USA.

This is the information I have for him.
Hans Skjonsberg was born in Norway approx. Dec 9,1867. He had two brothers whose names were Peter and Syvert who also emigrated. He may have had other siblings.
He married Helga Elisabet Johnson (born 09-1876 in the USA) on 03-30-1892 in Roslyn, South Dakota. They had 4 children in the USA before emigrating to Canada in 1900 (?) Martin, Pauline, Gustav and Oscar. Hans and Helga had 9 more children born in Canada. Hans died on 02-25-1957 and is buried in the Vig Cemetery in Bentley , Alberta, Canada.
I can't seem to find him on any USA census but he married there in 1892 His children were born in the USA in 1892,1895,1897,1899.
I appreciate any information you may find. Thank You.

Very likely the birth record for your Hans

Hans Olsen

Mother: Pernille Syversdr
FHL Film Number: 124366

#6

1875 Census

I do not see a Syvert in the census data, although this is probably his birth record

Hi all, some of the MyHeritage family tree info posted re Hans is incorrect (birth place, emigration date) so that may be confusing. Heads up.

Peter Olsen birth date 16 September 1863:

Jane is right the birth place of Oslo is incorrect, I do think the arrival date is in reference to the arrival of the family into Canada so that probably is correct for what it refers to.

A possible departure in 1889 by 23 year old Hans Olsen:
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/8/pe00000000469271

Destination of "Ratsay" is probably Rothsay in Minnesota.

A possible departure for Peder:

Can't be target Peder, see Hopkins post below.

Here is the match to the emigration record posted by Jackie for Hans Olsen destination Ratsay. There are of course several Hans Olsen arrival in April 1889, but this one has the passenger next to Hans named Carl Clausen destination Wisconsin (spelled Karl Klausen and destination Racine in the Digitalarkivet record). And on the same ship as Hans is a Ole K Reista destination Wisconsin (spelled Ole K Reistad destination Neilsville in the Digitalarkivet record).

Hans Olsen
in the New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957

Age: 23
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/ Nationality: Norwegian
Place of Origin: Norway
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England and Queenstown, Ireland

This Peter's location seems to match the land patent Jackie posted for Peter Skjonsberg in Day county.

A 1907 notice in the Sisseton, South Dakota, newspaper of Syver Skjonsberg's intention to "prove up" his Homestead Claim, with Peter Skjonsberg as witness of Syver's continuous residence on the property (a requirement):

The first papers for Hans are available for viewing through the LDS Family History catalog online. That is a free online viewing - familysearch.org

His papers clearly list that he landed in the US through the port of Philadelphia on or about June of 1889. The next document is for Peter and has the exact same date and entry location.
