My grand-grand farther from Hemsedal, Norway emigrated in 1884 on the ship Angelo to Hull. The emigration records from Oslo shows that the destination was Brandom. I can not find this location. Can it be the same as Brandon, Minnesota, or is it an other explanation? |

There were cities/towns named Brandon in a number of different US states, including: Minnesota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, Virginia, South Carolina, Texas, and more. |

Knut,
Who was your ancestor? There were a fair number of Hemsedøler who came to Brandon, Minnesota area. |

This was from findagrave.com for Anna Peterson Knutson buried at Kindkead Cemetery in Alexandria, Minnesota.
Mrs. Knutson, whose maiden name was Anna Peterson, was born in Norway, May 11, 1863, and at the time of her death she was 60 years, 5 months and 4 days of age. While still in her native land, she was united in marriage to Ole Knutson, Sept. 21, 1884.In October of that same year, they immigrated to the United States and came directly to Douglas County, settling in Evansville. Here they remained until 1903, when they came to Alexandria, and this has ever since been their home.
it says she came together with Ole Knutson but in the emmigration record referenced I did not see her name? Also note that Evansville is the town right next to Brandon. They are only a few miles apart. |

This looks like the couple in 1900 Census. Shows Ole arriving in 1884 but the marriage year is given as 1885? Also this Ole Knutson has a birth year of 1865 not 1856.

One can find a birth year for what appears to be the same Ole Knudson in Douglas County either as 1865 or as 1856. 1857 in the 1885 Minnesota State Census and 1865 in the 1900 US Census. 1856 in the 1905 Minnesota State Census.
1900 was posted above.

Jackie a couple of questions for you.
quote: The Ole Einar linked to who left in 1884 was listed as married (g).
You have totally lost me here, where is the link from Einar and where does it say he was married?
Also do you think the Ole and Anna from 1900 are the same as the Ole and Anne and Caroline from 1885 and 1905 Minnesota census
In the 1900 US Census his birth year is 1865 and in the 1905 Minnesota Census his birth year is 1856, children seem to be basically the same.
The 1885 Minnesota census shows age at least birth date for ole at 28 and Anna at 22.
The original for the 1900 shows birth year of 1865 and age at last birth date as 34 and Anna as 1863 and 37.
The 1905 Minnesota census has Ole at 49 and Anna at 42. |

Thank you all for very interesting information. I am new to this forum and is supriced of the response. I can confirm that my grand-grand farther was Ole Knudsen. He was born i Hemsedal Jun 13 1856 and grew up at the small farm Aasen. He became the father of my grand farther Knut O. Torsethaugen in 1881. He was not married to my grand-grand mother Ollaug Syversen. As you have found out he married Anna Olsdatter (Petterson) in september 1884 and left for USA. That is the last we know of Ole. It was not popular those days to have children outside marriage, so may grand farther and parents did not tell us anything. According to the passager list, Ole and Anne left on the same boat, but with different destination (Brandom and New York)(!?). I willl study the information you found so far closely, and is interested in more information about Ole Knutson, his occupation, date of death etc. I highly appreciate your support and is excited to got new insite in our family secrets. |
