I'm looking for information about Willie Olson, who came to the United States in 1907, according to the census taken in North Dakota in 1920. He was born in 1894 and died in North Dakota in 1922 of pneumonia. I'd like to know the family names and birth place. Please send me suggestions,

Birth: 15 May 1894 - Norway
Marriage: 3 April 1915 - Devils Lake, Ramsey, North Dakota, United States
Death: 25 May 1922 - Ramsey, North Dakota, USA

Spouse: Pauline Louisa Zettler

The free databases at Familysearch.org give you access to this man's draft registration for WWI. The birthdate is an exact match, he resides in Ramsey Co. ND, and it lists his place of birth as Skien, Norway. Skien is in Telemark so that is where you should look for his birth information.

A second chance to find some clue as to his actual place of origin in Norway -- in the 1920 US federal census he is recorded as having started the paperwork to become a naturalized US citizen. Get that paperwork and it may clarify.

A tough find. I did find a William Emmanuel Olsen arrival age 11 with probably mother Nikoline Marie Olsen age 43 and other younger children Ingalf, Dagna, Olga, Hans. Last residence Skien. Arrival was 1903 not the 1907 shown on the 1920 US Census. Destination is Milwaukee Wisconsin.

William Emanuel Olsen
in the New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
Name: William Emanuel Olsen
Arrival Date: 27 Jul 1903
Birth Date: abt 1892
Age: 11
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/ Nationality: Scandinavian
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Cymric

Based on this WWII Draft Card I would say this is not the William Olsen from North Dakota.

William Emanuel Olsen
in the U.S., World War II Draft Registration Cards, 1942
Name: William Emanuel Olsen
Gender: Male
Race: White
Residence Age: 53
Birth Date: 19 Sep 1889

No, he died in 1922 of pneumonia, leaving my Mom's aunt, his wife, with three children, ages 6, 4, and 2. -Edith

If he had already started the naturalization process by 1920 then the fact that he died just two years later would not mean that the first papers filed would not necessarily still exist. So I don't understand your meaning.

I did not find any naturalization papers, so I'll have to look for other input. Thanks, Edith

You could get a copy of his death certificate from the state of North Dakota, cost is about $5 or $8. Here is a copy of the index listing for him.

If all goes well, Chronicling America has an obituary for him (not sure links work from the browser address so here goes)

You will have to throw out any from before 1907 (which I've done now except for the 2 in Ward county, since your William has a Ward county connection), those from other nations (Sweden and Denmark) and look to see if there might be one for your guy. These are from North Dakota:

Here is a possible in 1900 census, his birthplace is not recorded, birthyear as 1895 living in Porsgrun:
https://digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01037158004487

No luck here he is in 1910 as John William Olsen b 3 Nov 1895:

Also a couple of years earlier, his WWI draft reg card says he is a declarant i.e. has filed his declaration of intention to become citizen.

I have asked his granddaughter to order a copy of the death certificate, which I can only get if I'm a direct descendant, which I'm not - his wife was my Mom's aunt, sister of my grandmother. Or if he's been dead for 100 years, then the information becomes 'public', and according to the obit, which I already had, he died in 1922...

There is an Ancestry (something Zettler) database which contains the information that William's parents are Lorentz Johan Pederson Strom b. 18 Aug 1863 at Straumsnes, Nordland Norway and died in Minnesota 9 July 1929 and Ingeborg Christene Jacobson. Skien is in an entirely different place in Norway than Nordland. Would take some research to figure out.

Well it might be a spurious attribution. Here is the family in 1910 Census:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M2PQ-SSR

and 1900 census. No Willie, William, Edmund in either:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M99R-LNK

Pauline married a 2nd time here is 1930 census:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XKV8-B3X

The database mentioned above make a wrong connection. Clarence Stromme in Ramsey county in 1930 is a different person than Clarence Strom in Polk county, Minnesota in 1930:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X385-MVP

Clarence Stromme with some siblings in 1920 in Ramsey county:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MC8D-KVF

Probably Clarence Stromme's family in 1910. Name is indexed as Stravene but actually looks like Straume in the actual schedule:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9RKH-QYK?i=1&cc=1727033

You are able to get dc for genealogical purposes. For instance I just got my step mother's d.c. and she is absolutely no relation to me whatsoever. The only thing missing was her cause of death. You can also get a d.c. because you are a cousin.
