Gudrun Sofies father was Jonas Gustav Gulbrandsen, born in Oslo in 1842 and died in Trondheim, Norway on July 4th 1901. As I can recall the dentist Albert C Vielle had been seeking his roots in Norway and been in touch with Sverre Gulbrandsens father Sverre Gustav Gulbrandsen 1880-1963. Albert also visited Norway in this connection, Albert's letter was a sort of summary of his experiences seeking his roots. I've a scanned copy of the letter if someone is interested and tells me how and where to send it.

Well, I work like an aggressive octopus. Slap on the tentacles and start probing with the itty bitty ends of the tentacles until I find the thing that cracks the shell open. I got nowhere with the name Vielle or Gudrun but the piece of information that worked for me was the wife's name of Gutterson. Sometimes things go better sideways than straight forward.

I can't say that it would have happened sooner if you had shared the source when I asked but it probably would have. As it is I'm wondering if you have the envelope with a postmark on it. Curiosity never stops.

So now I wonder where Albert was in the 1900 census?

JUDGE ALLEN INDIGNANT Collusion in a Divorce Case Sternly Reprimanded
"Mrs. Gudrum Vieiile has been suing her husband, Constant Vieiile, for divorce. How she came to do it is another story and this' was told in court yesterday in such a manner as aroused the just indignation of Judgc Allen. On January 19th the complaint first filed by Mrs. Vieiile was heard by Judge York, and evidence of actual desertion being faulty, the cause was dismissed without prejudice. A new complaint was filed shortly thereafter, alleging in addition to desertion failure to provide and drunkenness. In both suits W. P. Hyatt acted as attorney for Mrs. Vieiile. Yesterday he came into court with his client to press a motion for alimony. It was ascertained that Hyatt was first retained, as counsel by the husband, who was quite as anxious as his wife to secure the dissolution of the bonds assumed on June 18, 1890. For some reason that action was abandoned and Hyatt went to Mrs. Vieilie and induced her to institute a suit against h«r husband, telling her, as she swore yesterday, that he would get a decree for $3 and that the expenses should not be burdensiome. The inference was that her husband would foot the bilis and had sent his lawyer to negotiate with his wife with respect to the suit. Judge Allen yesterday spoke with much severity of Hyatt's attempt to impose upon the court. Though representing the woman in the case, he held that Hyatt had never been employed by her and that the evidence of collusion was too plain for denial. "You were the attorney for her husband," said Judge Allen, "and yet you went to her to get her to apply for a divorce. What the object was is not plain, but probably you knew that her husband could not get a decree and so thought you would induce her to commence an action herself. "I tell you right now that neither one will get a divorce in this court. As the child is at the Sisters' home, I will issue an order that the father pay on the first day of each month $10 to the managers of that institution for the support of the child. The cause will remain in this court, that proof may be had that the order herein made is observed in good faith."

Los Angeles Herald, Number 147, 14 February 1899

These California news articles are searchable / viewable at https://cdnc.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/cdnc

So Albert is in an institution in 1899....but probably elsewhere by 1900

No. no envelope from Albert but I wouldn't be surprised if the receiver Sverre Gulbrandsen has the wanted envelope. I'll ask him and pass on the information to you. But as I can recall the family has resided in Carmel, CA so it wouldn't surprise me if the letter was sent from this area.

When Albert C Vieille sent his letter to Sverre Gulbrandsen there is a stamp with his address at the bottom; 3499-211 Bahia Blanca W. Laguna Hills, CA 92653. I really apreciate your patience and kindness helping me to solve my unanswered questions. Overseas searches are difficult when not having paid for a Familysearch membership.Thank you very much!

This is getting more and more interesting and it takes time for me to comment all but you're wondering where Albert went quoting "So now I wonder where Albert was in the 1900 census?"
The statement form the court says "As the child is at the Sisters' home". Gudrun Sofie also had a sister in America, Bergljot Petrovna Jacobsen born Gulbrandsen, married to Jacob Christian Jacobsen. This was probably one of the many fosterhomes Albert ended up in. At the emigration card here in Norway which link you sent me says the ticket for Gudrun Sofie was prepaid from America and I presume Bergljot Petrovna did that.

Speaking of Bergljot Petrovna Jacobsen. She had 3 children. 2 daughters, Sofie Caroline and Viola Signe wich both married with the Arneman bros. For the brother Otto Simon Jacobsen 1893-1964 I've no information whatsoever. Can I please ask you to run a search for him too? Just to look for a wife and children?

An other sister Freda Petra Rønne (Ronne) Gulbrandsen/Guldbrandsen is not accounted for and did she also emigrate to America? Is it possible for me to please ask for a search here too?

An other

Unfortunately I can't open anything from Familysearch here but for Robert there is a lot of information online due to his position as a war veteran. He was married to Elle Vieille born Bushnell but they had no children I think

We've heard before that some in Norway can't open familysearch. They have a new procedure that requires you to be registered. Simple process and FREE. You have to be registered and signed in to use the site.

What picture is on the stamp? Because of the zipcode the letter is after 1964.
