Not to confuse things but i found Gilbert Nelson(1834/35) and Marie(or Elizabet Marie)1849/1850 with daughter Dinah Nelson(abt1869) living in Chicago according to 1870 census. Chicago is close to Herscher(Joe Boyd's farm location)

Could this be the same Dina?
If so, they can be found in Chicago in 1880 also:
Gilbert Nelson m 36 sailor
Elisabeth Nelson f 33
Regina Nelson f 11
Nellie Nelson f 8
Jennie Nelson f 6

Jan Peter, that probably is the same Dina but she was buried in Chicago so we can rule her out as the real Tena/Dina because Tena was buried in Herscher. Tks for eliminating a lose end

It could, but it can come from any Norwegian named Niels, Nils or Nels and we have yet to find one that seems to be the right one.

The reason we do not think it is Niels Mikkelsen from Fjellberg is that in the 1865 Census he and wife Agothe Abelsdatter had not yet had children.

And between the 1865 date and the birth of Abel Mikael and Mikael Elias Nilsen born July 9, 1868 I have only found for Niels Mikkllsen and Agathe Abelsdatter one child Malene Helene born in 1866. The family with five children can be found at Stølsdal Bjellebø in the 1875 Census

1875

Nils Mikkelsen is confusing, and there's not much about him in the local farm history book for Fjelberg.

I noticed there are two Nils Mikkelsen in the area.
The one I referred to previously is likely wrong. He is born 1853 and married on 26. May 1880 with Johanne Jørgine Nilsdr Sjo.
He is Nils Mikkelsen Landa, son of Mikkel Gunnarson and Grete Nilsdotter, was born on 14. Mar 1853 in Sæbø nedre, Fjelberg, Hordaland, was christened on 16. Mar 1853 in Eid kyrkje, Fjelberg, Hordaland, died on 16. Apr 1908 in Landa, Fjelberg, Hordaland at age 55, and was buried on 24. Apr 1908 in Eid kyrkje, Fjelberg, Hordaland.
He is mentioned in 1865 in Sæbø øvre, Fjelberg, Hordaland. 13 yo, Farmhand.
He is mentioned in 1875 in Landa, Fjelberg, Hordaland. Sailor

I believe the correct Nils Mikkelsen is this one:
Nils Mikkelson Hamn 1833-1923
Farm: Stølsdalen under Bjellebø, Fjelberg Hordaland.
Marriage 1: Agate Abelsdotter Dørem 1829-1893.
Children:
Malene Helene
Helga Severine 1874. Parents lived at Gjerde when Helga was born.
Twins Mikel Elias Nelson and Abel Mikel Nelson are not mentioned in reference to this family...

Marriage 2: Ida Gurine Kolbeinsdotter Toftekalven 1862-1952
Children:
Akseline
Bjørge 1894
Ågot 1899, married Torvald Johannesson Eide
Ingeborg Serine Jansdatter
Malene Nilsdatter, married Torstein Torsteinsen Dyrnes
3 of them emigrated to America

What do we know about this Nels Thorsen who is according to a tree the brother of Siri (Sarah Thorson) born supposedly 1848 in Norway. The reason he caught my eye is that he is married to a Dina, who also has been called Tena Enger? .

Name: Nels Thorson
Birth Date: Sep 1848
Birth Place: Norway
Death Date: 1906
Death Place: Herscher, Kankakee County, Illinois, United States of America
Cemetery: Grand Prairie Lutheran Cemetery
Burial or Cremation Place: Herscher, Kankakee County, Illinois, United States of America

1880

In the 1900 US Census Nels Thhorson is living near his brother Albert and is listed as being born in Illinois

Named Julian by the transcriber but it is Nels or Nelson

1900

So in 1900 all three of the brothers of Siri (Sarah) are living in Pilot Kankakee practically next to one another , Thor with wife Caroline, Albert with wife Sadie and Nels with wife Tense. All on page 18 of the Census Records.

On page 17 is father of them all Ole along with his daughter Sarah and husband Joseph Boyd

Further digging into who did Nels Thorson marry. He married Anne J Enger daughter of John Enger and Anne Larsdtter all of Grundy Illinois. John Enger is identified in a tree as the son of Johanes Johnaessen Enge of Skaanvik Hordaland. Johannes Johannessen Enge b 1805 is the son of Johannes Johannessen and Siri Bjørnsdatter. Now we need to see if the records will support this since this makes Nels Thorson and his wife Anna Enger related.

Johannes Johannes Dyviken was baptized Feb 3, 1805 father was Johannes Dyviken (same as Dybvig?). Married as Johanes Johannessen Enge to Anna Larsdatter on May 24, 1845. His second marriage. His father is listed as Johannes Johannessen Dybvig Skannvig. They are married in Etne.

#4

Kari Johannesdatter Dybvig was baptized Jan 15, 1815 father was Johannes Dybvig, mother was Sirie. Karie married Ole Thorsen July 17,1836. As posted earlier by Jan Peter

What source is it that gives Dina a birthplace of Etne? Nevermind has been answered earlier in thread. Has it been determined that Siri or Joseph are from Etne?
Ditto.
Opening up the Norwegian digital arkivet for *Dina, no specified last name, from the emigration records only for 1867-1872, and then looking for girls 2 and under, finds these few:

Dina Martine (last name not determined) age 9/12 months resident of Hurdalen leaving 1869-04-10

Dina Johansen 3/4 year resident of S. Odalen 1869-05-11

Dina (last name not determined) 1 year S. Odalen 1870-10-06 (destination is Wellington NZ)

Dina (last name not determined) 3/4 year Ø. Aker 1872-03-28

Dina Mathilde Evensd. 1/2 year 6 months Blakjer 1868-04-18

Dina Magnus.* 2years Høland 1868-04-18

Dina Niels.* (this is the one from Gran and has already been accounted for and eliminated)

Dina Evensen Riis age 1 year Nittedalen 1870-06-22

Her death notice in the Herscher paper said she was born in Etna, Norway on Oct 10, 1868 and came to Illinois at age 1yr with her parents Joe and Sarah(Thorson) Boyd. She had 7 children: Louise, Mabel, Iborra, Myrtle, Thorval, Joe, and my grandmother Anna. Could the Etna reference actually be referring to Etne which would fit with the Baúge Skånevik? Does Yttre translate to "outer"? Are Sarah and Siri interchangeable names? Why did Ole Thorsen Flatland have "vagrant" after his name? Thanks again for all your wonderful help. Robert

Does this obituary / death notice tell of any surviving siblings?

The will of Joseph A. Boyd on FamilySearch.org clearly indicates that Houcky and Tina were adopted. (Kankakee County Will Book 3, page 177.)

The Probate Books for Kankakee County also seem to include other legal records - I briefly noticed guardianship papers and naturalizations when looking for some kind of an index in those digitized books.
