Jackie, Tena's death notice doesn't mention any siblings, but remember she died at age 95.

Okay then vice versus, do any of the proposed siblings Houcky Boyd and Ida Nelson report her as sibling or half sibling?

Jackie, when you searched immigration records for Dina would entries for Dinah have come up?

The Probate Books for Kankakee County also seem to include other legal records - I briefly noticed guardianship papers and naturalizations when looking for some kind of an index in those digitized books.

Great find. Now it wonders me if Houcky and Dina are blood relations to each other? Guardianship records would be helpful from the 1870s....

I actually searched as *dina so it would have been every combination of letters before dina but if spelled Dinah, or dine I'm not sure it would have. But that search is easily done.

Robert, did Joseph and Sarah Boyd have any children other than Dina, Hockse and Ida?

I notice for the baptism of a son of Hockse the witnesses are Oliver Tofte, Tina Tofte, Oscar Boyd, Ella Boyd and Ida Boyd I am assuming that Oscar Boyd and Ella Boyd are children of Syvert Boyd.

It sticks with me that both those young children are listed as Boarders in the 1880 US census rather than adopted children - so perhaps the adoption took place after that census.
There are a number of "Probate" court record books for Kankakee that are available to browse through page by page, years 1853-1926 through the catalog of FamilySearch.org. I do not have the time to go through all of those to find Houcky and/or Dina/Tina and the Joseph Boyd family and I didn't happen to find an index. I would think that someone who has actual family ties and reason to be very interested would make the time themselves.

Hopkins, the will discovery was great! Confirmed what was previously speculation. I've now spent 3hrs trying to find it on Family Search but can't properly navigate the site...any tips on how to get to it?

Search their CATALOG. I started by searching for Illinois. Then chose to look at the list of places within Illinois which correctly spelled Kankakee for me. Choose Kankakee and see the list of topics they have in their collection for that county. Probate records were one of the topics and when I chose it listed the books and years, old microfillm numbers we used to be able to order and had little camera icons off to the right of each. That icon means you can look at the pages of that book while online in the catalog. The Will books were listed under that topic.
I'm not sure there is any advantage to choosing "Illinois Probate Records are available online, click here." because it seemed to me to include all the books at the same time and I wanted to reduce the number of pages I was scanning through. But you may want to to try both and see which you prefer.

Sometimes searching the CATALOG may not give you an option to view records online BUT you will learn of their existence and where they are to develop other means of access. I've found published history books listed for areas that I was then able to borrow by Inter-Library Loan and helped me immensely in my own family research. Other times the CATALOG may inform you that you must visit one of their Family History Centers to be able to view - and there are many of those all over the world.

This may be the index to the Probate records:

The adoption of Tena (b.10 Oct 1869) and Hucken (b.15 Jul 1872) Nelson. Mother is dead, father is living but has abandoned the children, and his whereabouts is unknown. The adoption is dated December 6th 1883, and it says that Tena and Hucken have lived with them for more than 7 years, ie since about 1875-76.

Incredible to see the actual will and adoption papers, what terrific digging you have done! The adoption papers also confirm Tena's Oct 10th birthday but make her 1 year younger with a birth yr of 1869. Even with Hopkins help i have yet to conquer the Kankakee records system so tks again for the above documents. You all must be exhausted by what i thought to be a strait -forward query

Check to see if there is an LDS Family History Center (FHC) somewhere fairly near to you. Check their schedule of open hours and go visit. A volunteer at a FHC should be able to show you how to simply navigate that system of showing scanned images of items in their HUGE and growing catalog of resources. They have planned to keep adding scanned images to their website - it would be best you learn to use them.

You do not have to be a member of their church to use their FHC and in all the years I've used the one nearest me I've never been preached at or pressured in any manner.

Someone has tried to make a YouTube video to help...
