Mads Christian Smith Jorstad was born March 8, 1879 in Drammen Norway. He married Anna Kathinka Gulhaugen and settled in Oslo. They got 3 children together the last in September 1903. Mads Announces New York May 16th 1903 and Seeks Nationals 16 August 1905. At the 1920 census in New York, I find him as Mathew Smith married to Caterine Smith and have a 15-year-old daughter. She is also called Catherine. At the 1930 census, they live in the same place, but their daughter has moved. https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/6224/4638815_00491?pid=40379560&treeid=&personid=&usePUB=true&_phsrc=dkl46&_phstart=successSource no 69 and 70 .. Another possible link, based on complete name and the fact that the SS Number was issued in New York
Probably not her. Found several Family Trees that show her born in Connecticut and her parents as William Smith and Catherine Smith.
Catherine A. Smith in the U.S., Social Security Death Index, 1935-2014 Name: Catherine A. Smith SSN: 066-07-8790 Last Residence: 01852 Lowell, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA BORN: 4 Feb 1906 Died: 24 Feb 1998 State (Year) SSN issued: New York (Before 1951) |

I can't find Catherine on the same cemetary as Matthew. Can she have moved? Catherine was born in Irland.

Smith would not be a common name to take up for a Norwegian. New York is so big that there could be, coincidentally, 2 Norwegians named Mathew (some combination or name spelling) Smith b about 1878-1889 who were both occupied as painters, but the odds on that are very long.
Re the daughter Catherine, she could have died between 1920 and 1930 or she could have moved away and lives elsewhere or she could have married. The 1930 census could tell a lot if it were possible to find a Catherine b. New York 1905-1907 living with another name whose father is recorded in the census as born Norway. That would be a very long and painful search and no guarantee.
Re Matthew if the sexton of the cemetery has kept proper records it might be possible to see who else is buried in the same plot as he. Catherine, the wife, might not have had a marker and so not appear in FAG.
