In the mid 1800s my great-great grandparents left Stigen for the USA. Looking for more info on Jens & Severine Styve. |

There is a lot of information on this family in the United States, including census data etc. So I assume you are looking for information on them from Norway?
Jens Styve in the Web: North Dakota, Find A Grave Index, 1850-2012 Name: Jens Styve Birth Date: 1843 Age at Death: 82 Death Date: 1925 Burial Place: Nelson County, North Dakota, USA
This record might give you some information on their names
Jens Jórgensen Styve in the U.S., Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Church Records, 1826-1945 Name: Jens Jórgensen Styve Gender: Male Spouse: Severine Elefsdtr Child: Ole Marten Styve Church Name: Gol Moland Church Location: Kenyon, Minnesota |

Here is a couple that are probably the people you are looking for in the 1865 Census. The first two in the census list are Jens Jørgensen and Sivrine Ellevsdatter and are likely your great-great grandparents from Aurdal, Sogn og Fjordane.
1865
Jens Jørgensen married Severine Elifsdatter on October 16, 1865
#15
His father is Jørgen Olsen and her father was Elif Sjursen |

Severine Elifsdatter Stegen was confirmed in 1856
#19
Based on the confirmation record these are the parents of Severine in the 1865 Census on Stegen. Father is Ellef Sjursen and mother is Ingeri Kjeldsdatter.
1865
Eilev Sjursen married Ingerid Kjeldsdatter on June 12, 1837
#7
His father is Sjur Jonsen and her father is Kjeld Hermundsen |

Thank you all for the input - lines up with info I have, which only gives me Severine and Jens' births and deaths. Is there any confirmation that they actually lived at the farm on the side of the fjord (Stigen) and the date they would have left for the USA? |

In 1865 Census Jens Jørgensen and his wife Sivrine Ellevsdatter lived on Bakke
When they were married in 1865 Sivrine Eilfsdtter is referenced with the farm name Stegen and her husband with the farm name Bakke. So it is possible that at that time she was living on the Stegen farm before they were married. That conclusion is supported by the fact that also in the 1865 Census the parents of Sivrine, Eilef Sjursen and Ingeri Kjeldsdatter are listed as living on either Stegmark or Stegen and that when confirmed in 1856 Sivrine was tagged with the Stegen farm name.
So it is likely that wife Sivrine Ellevsdatter lived on Stegen with her parents at some point in time but not after she married Jens Jørgensen. |

Where is Bakke? That I did not know. As far as I know when she married Jens she was alone on the farm and he also lived there after the marriage; but this may not be accurate. I will check with my source of information? Does anyone know if there is a way to find out who would have lived at Stigen after she left there? |

The best way to determine who lived on a farm and when; is to use the Bygdebok for that area. Probably this one, Aurland bygdebok "Undredal og Nærøy" Gard og Ætt by Åsmund Ohnstad. |

Based on his birth date of 1803 and farm location of Styve I would guess that this is the baptism of the father of Jens Jørgensen. Child is Jørgen Olsen baptism June 11, 1803, on Styve. Father is Ole Jørgensen and mother is Ragnhild Olsdattter.

This would appear to be the baptism of Synneve Simmendsdater on Sept 21, 1806. Father is Simon Olsen and mother is Ingeborg Atlesdatter. Farm is spelled here as Jellum but also spelled Gellum in earlier records.
Link
Synneve Simmesdatter is the wife of Jørgen Osen listed above. In the marriage record listed above as number 10 the farm listed for Jørgen Olsen was Styvi and the farm listed for Synneve Simesdatter was spelled Gjellum.
Here is the family of Simon Olsen and Ingeborg Atlesdatter on the farm Giellum in the 1801 Census. Of course your ancestor Synneve was not born until 1806.
1801
And this is the baptism record for Synneve born in 1806.

Here is a link to the original from the parish records. A little hard to find perhaps but look near the top of the right hand page and you will see the underlined name Synneve followed by the word Parent and the names Simen Olsen and Ingeborg Attlesdatter Jellum.
Link
If you look further down the page of the 1801 Census you will see the parents of Simon Olsen. They are Ole Simonsen born about 1721 and Synneva Bottoldsdatter born about 1739. |

Good question! The local historybooks seems to prefer the spelling Stegen, and that is also how it is pronounced locally. While the official norwegian maps use the spelling Stigen.
Copied from the local book "Undredal: kyrkja og bygda" (Undredal: The church and the village)
Stegen (Stigen) (pronounced "stegen") Previously written Stenmarck (1603), Stegemorch (1611), Stimarck (1647, 1667), Stigemarchen (1723), Steegen (1771). Means "The path" from old norwegian "stigr" = path, walkway.

It is my understanding that the older name for the farm and thus group of sub-farms was Stegen or Stegemark and the name that is used in modern times is Stigen. Perhaps one of the native Norwegians can weigh in with a better answer.
Whoops missed the fact that Jan Peter weighed in!
In the Aurland bygdebok for Undredal og Nærøy, Gard og Ætt the chapter is titled Stigen but the list of people living on the various sub-farms are referred to as Stegen.
The bygdebok also has this to say about the farm name, Translated into English.
The farm name is written Stigemorch in 1611, Stigemarch in 1723, Stegemark from then until 1900, and after 1900 Stegen. On the basis of the City Names Act of 1990, it is agreed that the farm name must be written as Stigen.

Another farm in the same area as Stegen. You can use the NHDC Census web site to get an idea of the layout of the farms and their names. Here is a link to the Bache farm in 1801

Here is a list of farms in order of their position in both the 1801 and the 1865 Census. Bakke was also called Bache. The list is the farms between Stegen and Bakke. The numbers refer to sub-farms on the main farm.
