While researching my great-grandfather’s emigration from Sogndal, Norway to America, I sought help from archivists at the State of Mass. to locate a passenger list for the Cunard steamsip Atlas—other documents from Norway show my great-grandfather arriving in Boston. Today I received a photocopy of the passenger list for the Atlas—which includes my ancestor. The Atlas arrived in Boston on 4/27/1880...but this website shows the arrival being in New York. This appears to be incorrect; it should be Boston.

You misunderstand what part of the database the Atlas listing is from.
Here is the title:
Arrivals reported in Norwegian newspapers
April 1880

So if it is erroneously reported its probably that way from the newspaper reporting it.

Isn't Newport at Rhode Island South from Boston?

Well, the passenger list from the State of Mass. says it arrived in Boston—similar to every other landing of this ship that year. And other emigration records show my great-grandfather arriving in US at Boston—from Liverpool—on this date.

The records on Ancestry.com do show that the Atlas did arrive in New York but not arriving from Liverpool and not in April of 1880.

Atlas is shown arriving several times in 1880 from Panama and Jamaica. . The closest to April is an arrival on May 8, 1880 with about 10 passengers. Here is an example.

Mr. J Joseph
in the New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
Name: Mr. J Joseph
Arrival date: 8 May 1880
Birth Date: abt 1868
Age: 12
Gender: Male
Place of Origin: Jamaica
Port of Departure: Colon and Ete
Destination: England
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Atlas

Boston is likely correct due to the other evidences, although the newspaper article reads Newyork.
Either incorrect information in the received telegram, or a typo by the journalist.
