I am trying to locate a passenger list and birth record for the following two family members....
Caroline Hendricksen
b.1836 Norway (per 1860, 1870, 1880 census and bur. record)
also listed as Karen on two of her children's birth records
her father
Torsten Hendricksen (also seen as Tuston and Tosten Hendriksen)
b.1783 Norway (per 1870 scensus)
or b.1790 Norway (per burial record in Illinois)
1855 state census lists 8 children in household
1865 state census lists only 1 child
youngest son Gunther Tobias Hendricksen born in Illinois in 1850 -his mother was Inga (Gunderson?) but may be a 2nd wife.
I have located a Tosten Hendricsen that was born in 1783 on the 1801 Buskerud census, but need to confirm that he is the correct person. This Tosten m.1811 Anne Kirstine Hansdatter at Buskerud.
Only other identified child is
Henrick Henricksen b.1831 Norway (wife Karine)
I believe they immigrated c1842 but have not been able to locate them using the search engines.
Any help would be greatly appreciated !! Thank you.

his wife Randi Jahnsdatter 48 years old (born ab 1795)
children:
Marius 21 years old
Henrik 11 years old (born ab 1832)

Halvor 4 years old

Torsten Henriksen Doxrød: He was born on the farm Doksrød in Gjerpen and baptised February 14, 1797 in Gjerpen church. His parents were Henric Torstensen Doxrøe (dead Oct 7, 1835) and Karen Tolvsdatter. They married 1792. He married February 7, 1822 Randi Jahnsdatter Stulen. She was born 1794 on the farm Stulen and baptised in Gjerpen church
January 19. Her parents were Jan Tolvsen Stulen (b. 1757) and Kirsten Jacobsdatter (b. 1753). They married 1788.Torsten and Randi had the following children:

Doksrød - Doxroed in USA.
- Marius/Marcus b Feb. 8. 1822 used the name Marcus Doxroed in USA
- Henrik b Jan. 25. 1832 lived as Henrich Doxroed in USA.

And to add to Vivi's fine find. Halvor and family are #119 to 125. Big family
This is the most likely family for Halvor and Anne as several of the children from the ship are found with these parents. Here is Anders the youngest.

My puzzle now has more pieces, but still doesn't quite fit together. Thank you all for your help !!!
If I can indeed find proof that this is my family, I can add about 4 generations with the records in Norway and the history of the Farm Doksrød. Unfortunately, I can not find any of these names listed in America. The Lutheran church records state that the sponsors for two of Caroline Hendriksen Berntson's children were Henrik Henriksen & G.T. (Gunter Tobias) Henriksen -which are brothers of Caroline. Torsten Hendricksen d.13Oct1877 (age 87) and Henry Hendricksen d.28May1881 (age 50) - both buried at Graceland cemetery in Chicago,Il. (Caroline is buried there too). The records given above list both Torstensen and Doksrød as possible surnames, however, I haven't been able to locate these names in any of the US indexes. I just need to find that one little piece of information that conclusively connects the families. Thanks again for the help !! |

Well you may be asking a lot of these old US records. The 1870 US Census shows a older man born about 1783 in Norway named some version of Torsten Hendricksen (Tuston C Hendrickson) living in Chicago Illinois, in the same household as married Caroline Barrensen born abt 1836 Norway. Also living in the same household is a Toby Hendricsen born about 1850 in Illinois. Various ELCA records show the baptism of various children of Caroline Berentsen and Alexander Bernetsen to be witnesses by various people with the last name Hendricksen. One baptism in 1870 witnessed by a Henrich Hendriksen and G T Hendricksen.
That is not bad for evidence that Caroline is the same as Karen Torstensdatter born 1836.
Basically the family all started using the fathers last name at some point after arriving in America. Not that unusual and if they never used the farm name of Doxrød and never used Tosten's first name as their last name in America you have maybe the best that you are going to get.
For the record and for the other posters on site to look at, I will post the three records discussed above.

| I'm hoping to find the family on the 1850 and 1860 censuses. The 1855 census for Chicago lines up with the number and ages for the children (although the parents ages are slightly off). By 1865, all the children except Tobias have moved out. Either of the two censuses I'm searching should provide the connection that I am looking for. Tobias' birth record states his mother's name was Inga. I have also found a Tosten Hendricksen b.1783 Kongsberg,Buskerud,Norway. I have the children for his first marriage but have not been able to locate a marriage and children for the second. |

The pieces are fitting together. I located the family in a church record for Oconomowoc, Wis. They arrived "by emigration" 03Mar1844 and departed Sep1844 for Chicago,Il. I then found the family in the same church as my Berntson family (Torsten & spouse, Henrik and spouse, and Gunder as sponsor to many of the Berntson baptisms). I also found Markus and his children. The real "find" was locating Alexander and Karen's marriage record. (Many of these records did not come up in any search engines - all found by page-by-page research).
I still have not found a death record for Randi or marriage record for Torsten to Inga Gunderson. The particular church records I have been searching do not have death records.
