Looking for Norwegian records on Margit Christopherson. According to US Census data (which is many times incorrect), she was born in 1853, 1856, or 1858 in Norway. I believe Telemark.

US Census data also shows she emigrated to America in 1876 or 1885 and settled in Minnesota. I have information about her starting from 1887 (marriage to Carl August Hammer) after she arrived in America.

Thanks

There's just no consistency in the US data. I know it's the same person based on the location, spouse, and children names:
1900 - Feb 1853; age 47; Immigration 1885
1905 - 1848 (est); age 57; Years in state: 20 (which would be 1885)
1910 - 1860 (est); age 50; Immigration 1876
1920 - 1859 (est); age 61; Immigration 1879; Naturalization 1887
1930 - 1857 (est); age 73; Immigration 1890 (which can't be right)
1940 - 1856 (est); age 84

www.findagrave.com headstone shows 1856 - 1944 (if I'm looking at the correct headstone) and the website shows the birth to be Jan 1856. However, the birthplace is listed as Wisconsin, USA (which isn't correct).

Records for two female children at FamilySearch.org, Alice and Clara, born to Carl Hammer in Minnesota list their mother as either Margaret or Margret Christopherson born in Telemarken.
The gravestone for the same woman in Scott Co. MN lists her as Margaret Hammer born Jan 1856 in Wisconsin.
The 1905 Minnesota State census lists Marie Hammer as born 1848 in Norway.

Has an obituary been found for this woman? A church record of her marriage to Carl Hammer?

We are posting items at almost the same time...

But a VERY interesting item is the Minnesota death record for "Margretta Hammer", died May 1944 in Scott Co. MN where it lists her father as "Swen Christotherson". So if she were recorded with traditional patronymic naming in Norway she would be some variation on Margaret Swensdatter. and there would be quite a few variable spellings on those two...

I haven't found either an obituary or marriage record. I do know this about the marriage:

29 December 1887
Lakeville, Dakota, Minnesota, United States

U.S., Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Church Records, 1826-1945. Married in Christiana Church. Listed as Carl Pederson Hamar. Witnesses Herman(?) Hamar and Kristina(?) P. Hamar.

However, I can't find the image.

Getting closer:
genealogytrails.com shows the couple:
Hammer, Carl P.? B. 1-29-1853 Norway. NY. 6-1878? 7 ch. 1st. P. 1878? Hastings, Mn.
Hammer, Maggie B. 2-16-1859 Raulau. Norway. NY. 1878? Husband = Carl.

1918 Alien Registration Form Transcription:
http://genealogytrails.com/minn/scott/census_alien.html

What does this mean: "NY. 6-1878? 7 ch. 1st. P. 1878?"

Raulau. Norway possibly Rauland, Telemark, Norway??

The notation starting with NY may somehow be referring to immigration? Otherwise, no idea.

The records of 'outgoing' from Rauland, Telemark list a servant girl "Margit Sveinsdtr" leaving 1885 for Amerika. That record lists her birth as 20 Jan 1855.
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20061127330235

The 1865 census of Rauland shows a servant girl Margit Svensdtr born 1856 in Tinn, Telemark.
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&knr=0835&kenr=005&bnr=0008&lnr=00

Parish records of births in Tinn, Telemark list a Margit born 20 Jan 1856 to Svend Christophersen and Aase Johnsdtr.

Strongest match I've been able to locate... hope it works out.

Thanks!

Do you have a link to this? "Minnesota death record for "Margretta Hammer", died May 1944 in Scott Co. MN".

I was assuming that her last name in Norway was Christopherson, but from researching I've done before, very rare that it would be once they arrived in America. Hopefully, you've provided the connection I need.

Even Carl Hammer started out in Norway as Carl Perdersen, since his dad was Peder. Hence, the listing "Carl P. Hammer".

Is it your assumption then that Margit assumed the last name of her father Sven Christstophersen when she arrived in America. There are no Mar* Christophers* listed in the 1865 Census for Telemark. There is Svein Kristoffersen and Aase Johnsdatter in Rauland in the 1865 Census

Link

And a marriage record for the same couple in 1852 in Tinn.

That death record was indexed into FamilySearch.org.
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FDWC-T41

You can also order a copy of the original death record from Minnesota. I learned that the original often contains more info than the online summary.

Tom - There is a family tree posted at the LDS website under the contributor name TomHammer which contains the birth information and ancestry of Margit already....
