How can I find passenger lists from Bergen or Stavanger for the year 1884. Probably late 1884. I assume from there to Hull and then the U.S.

The Digitalarkivet has a list of emigrants leaving from Stavanger http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/wc/webcens.exe?slag=meny&kategori=5&emne=1&spraak=e Due to the fact that the Stavanger emigration lists were destroyed in a fire, the Stavanger material is based on a multitude of sources. It won't have the exact date of departure or the ship.
