This is the new forum for Knute and Carrie Severson, started as an attachment to the Andrew Severson Forum. I was unable to get back and create this sooner, so appreciate the additional information you have already surfaced. I am the manager for the Find-A-Grave sites of Knute (70940098), Carrie (70940096) and Louis S. (81496179) who I am also descended from. The daughter of Louis, Clara, married Harvey McChesney of Waunakee/Vienna, Dane Co., Wi.We also have a lot of information I will try to add to this forum in Ancestry Behl/McChesney Family Tree. There are several Census', naturalization info, etc. But we were unable to locate Carrie's info, Knute's family info, or where they came from. |

So this is the transfer of the posts from the other thread.
dbehl, If I could make a suggestion. It would probably be useful if you would start a new thread. This thread is already six pages long and a bit difficult to slog through for information. It also starts out directed toward " Anders (Andrew) Severson born abt. 1817 in Norway. Lived in Waupaca, Wi". I do not know if he is or is not related to the Knute Severson that you bring into the discussion. So my suggestion is that we start from the beginning on your Knute Severson. If you would start a new thread and give us as much information as you can about Knute and his wife Caroline it would be very helpful.
Information such as have you found them in the US Census and if so which year etc. and the names that you have found them under.
Click on "New Topic" just below
Check this out and if it is the right family, I will move it to the new topic thread.
1870
Here is a candidate for the Caroline from the 1870 Census above. She was born Kari on Dec 10, 1841 and baptized Jan 9, 1842 in Voss, Hordaland, Norway. Her father was Lars Olsen Qvale and her mother was Brithe Olsdatter.
#12
Lars Olsen Qvale married Brithe Olsdatter Winje (Vinje) on June 3, 1828 in Voss, Hordaland. Qvale is also spelled Kvaale or Kvåle at times.
#10
Based on this data and the information you provided I would say that it is likely that Kari (Caroline) came to America with her parents.
It is likely that the husband also is from Voss and since the 1870 Census shows him being born about 1829, I would give you this Knud as a candidate. More work would need to be done to confirm that this Knud is the same as the one in the 1870 Census.
For this one I went to Ancestry.com
Knud Sivertsen in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927 Name: Knud Sivertsen Gender: Male Birth Date: 29 jun 1829 Baptism Date: 14 jul 1829 Baptism Place: Voss,Hordaland,Norway Father: Sjur Steffensen Mother: Brithe Larsdr
Here is the original record
#159
I see a Find-A-Grave Record for this person has a birth date of June 8, 1829 so that does not match exactly the original record posted above.
Knute Severson BIRTH 8 Jun 1829 DEATH 7 May 1913 (aged 83) BURIAL Leeds Cenetery Cemetery Leeds, Columbia County, Wisconsin, USA
Family Members Spouse Carrie Severson 1841–1922
Children Severt Severson 1864–1929 Louis S. Severson 1866–1903 Cornelius Severson 1874–1901
So that is a start. If you can start a new thread we will see if we can confirm this start. |

I think you will find that your ancestors came over a little earlier than you had thought. Here is Kari Larsdatter, daughter of Lars Olsen Quale (also spelled Qvale, Kvaale and Kvåle) along with her parents Lars Olsen Quale and Brite Olsdatter Quale as well as her brother Ole, sister Andrea (also spelled Andri), Kari your ancestry (also spelled Karen), Marthe and Birthe.
They travelled on the bark Bjørgvin leaving Bergen May 25, 1850 and arrived in New York July 1, 1850. They are listed as passengers numbered 80 to 86.
#80-86
Here is the transcribed record of the family leaving Voss parish, Hordaland.
Link
Here is the original record of the family leaving Voss parish on May 1, 1850. It is a little hard to read but they are numbers 344 to 350.
# 344-350
Also aboard the same ship is the sister of Kari, Ingeborg Larsdatter Qvale, and her husband Stephen Sjursen Agre (also spelled Ygre). They are numbers 48 and 49. They have a young son Sivert born in 1849 but I do not see him on the ship manifest.
However he is listed along with his parents in the transcribed list of passengers leaving Voss. Here they are numbers 258-260.
#258-260
And here with the same numbers in the original parish record
#258-260
I suspect that Kari Larsdatter Qvale marries the brother of her sisters husband.

So it is likely that the first daughter of Lars Olsen Qvale and Brithe Olsdatter, who was named Ingeborg was born Jan 26, 1829 in Voss, Hordaland.
#46
In Norway she married Stephen Sjursen (Sivertsen). He is the son of Sjure Stephensen Ygre and Brite Larsdatter. He was born Jan 31, 1825 also in Voss, Hordaland.
#27
They were married in Norway on June 5, 1849.
#36
Later in the United States probably Wisconsin, the fourth child Kari of Lars Olsen Qvale and Brithe Olsdatter also marries a son of Sjure Stephensen and Birte Larsdatter.
Kari was born Dec 10, 1842 to Lars Olsen Qvale and Brithe Olsdatter also in Voss parish.
#12
Her future husband Knud Sivertsen (Sjursen) was born June 29, 1829 also in Voss parish to Sjur Stephensen Ygre and Brite Larsdatter.
#159
Knud and Kari lived in Deerfield, Dane County.
And
Stephen (Steffen) and Ingeborg lived in Christiana, Dane County |

The original birth record for Knud Siversten at Voss in 1829 mentions the farm Ygre. Here is an excerpt from the section on the Ygre farm in Voss bygdebok. It relates that Knut's father died in 1839, following which his mother emigrated to America:

Interesting excerpt Tore. I had not suspected that the mother Brita had also emigrated to America. This is likely her with her daughter Gitle leaving for America in 1856.
#160 & 162
Posted above is the record for Steffa leaving with his wife Ingeborg Larsdatter Qvale. Just under those two are two other brothers of Steffa (Stephen), Lars and Ole (Olav) at 50 and 51.
#50 & 51
The only one missing is Knud. The closest I can come is a Knud Sjursen leaving in 1852 under the name Knud Sjursen Dugstad aage 26 1/2. That would give a birth year of about 1826 which is a little off from the 1829 I have found for him.
#32
He travelled on the brig Bjørgvin leaving Bergen on May 26, 1852 and arriving in New York on July 16, 1852

1870 census shows Knudt Seiverson at Deerfied, Wi. Dwelling #133,Family #138. This is the correct family based on wife's name and children. Ancestry has Knute arrival as 1857 in US and Canada Passenger and Immigration lists Index 1500 - 1900. but no ship or port info. Also Naturalization date of action 27 Sept 1859.
Not sure how to insert pictures/docs yet. but accessable in Ancestry on the Behl/McChesney Family Tree.

Here (again on Ancestry) is the 1861 marriage record from Koshkonong Parish for Knud Syvertsen Ygre -- son of Sjur Stephensen and Britha Larsdatter -- and Kari Larsdatter Qvale, daughter of Lars Olsen Qvale and Britha Olsdatter:

Nice finds on Ancestry, Tore. Since the OP seems to use Ancestry he should be able to see the original documents.
Working from a Forum discussion some further ancestors can be added to his family. Seems to use the same Bygdebok you quoted from.

Here is the family on Nedre Grauo in the 1801 Census. Does not match exactly the above description.

Is the last reply also relative to my search? I don't recognize the connection if it is. The Koshkonong information also included Betsey being confirmed and about the correct age, last listing. I really appreciate the help, I never would have understood the name shifts without your input. No wonder we weren't finding anything under the names they ended up using. |

It is complicated. I made this cheatsheet so that I could follow it myself.
Voss Family line for Brita Larsdatter born in 1800 and mother of two sons with Sjur Steffasen who married two sisters from the Qvale line
Odd Gudleikson Nedre Grauo
Son Gudleik Oddson born 1704
He married Gjertrud Olavsdatter Tverberg in 1735
They had a son Lars Gudleikson born 1747
He married Inga Olavsdatter Bidne in 1788
They had a daughter Brita Larsdatter in 1800.
She married Sjur Steffasen Ygre b 1795
They had a son Steffen Sjursen Ygre b 1825
He married Ingeborg Bretta Larsdatter Qvale
Steffen and Ingeborg emigrated in 1850
They lived in Christiana, Dane County Wisconsin
So Brita Larsdatter born in 1800 who married Sjur Steffasen Ygre born 1795
had another son named Knut Sjursen (known as Knud Severson in America)
He married Kari Larsdatter Qvale born in 1841
They lived in Deerfield, Dane County, Wisconsin
There is also a family line for Sjur Steffasen Ygre as well as the one above for his wife Brita Larsdatter Nedre Graou.
Thats not to mention that there is also a family line for Lars Olsen Qvale and his wife Brithe Olsdatter Vinje.

dbehl, Since you have a family tree on Ancestry.com you might be interested in the tree I stumbled on today. It is rather unsourced but looks quite correct based on the original records posted above. it gives a lot of children of the various parents and extends quite a ways back in time.
Halvorsen Family Tree
This tree is quite useful for understanding the family of Louis S Severson back in time. If you look at his Pedigree View you will see his four grandparents. They are
Sjur Steffasen Ygre b 1795
Brita Larsdatter Graudo b 1800
Lar Olsen Kvåle b 1806 ? (1808)
Britha Olsdatter Vinje b 1809
The pedigree view also gives the parents of all four of the grandparents |
