My great grandfather arrived in America in the early to mid 1880s. I don't know the exact year. He lived in Beitstad, North Trondelag. His name was Karl (Carl) Hammer which became Charles Hammer in America. Can anyone tell me which port he most likely departed from and which one he most likley arrived at? Hopefully, that will help me find him on a passenger list.
Well, there are about a half dozen Charles / Carl Hammer / Hamre in US in 1900 census. Each of them give a year of arrival in US. Which one is your guy?
The clue Beitstad generally will indicate travel through Trondheim. Usually by the 1880s transport to US from Norway is by way of a feeder ship from Norway to Great Britain and from there a larger transatlantic ship.
My Charles Hammer is the first one on the Family Search list on the link that you provided. Born in 1862 in Norway, living in Montana (Walkerville / Butte) in 1900.
Thank you!!! This info is VERY helpful. But it also raises questions. So, if you don't mind, I'll ask those here: 1. Registration Date and Date of Contract: these are the same date (August 3, 1885). Is this also the date he sailed? 2. There is no port of departure listed. You had suggested he left from Trondheim. The emigration record says under "Ship" via Kristiania. Does this mean he left from Kristiania before heading to Great Britain? 3. There is no port or date of arrival on this record. How might I find those? 4. Residence: Thjem is listed. Where is that? I assume that is where he departed from? 5. Destination: Dowson Minn. I don't find a Dowson, although there is a Dawson, MN. This would be where he is says he is headed once he lands in America rather than the port of entry - is that correct?
The example linked to from the "police lists" is a child who was 2 1/2 years old in 1885 so cannot be your man unless your Charles came to US with a child also named Carl Hammer. I should have waited for your response to the familysearch list before looking for him.
I think it is the right guy in both the 1865 and 1875 censuses above, he is just no longer living with his parents in 1875. There is no indication that he is the son in the household. But the strange thing is I don't find his confirmation in Beitstad.
From the book "Beistadboka 3: Utvik-Hervik" At the cotters place called Auriket lived in the 1865 census Lornts Evensen. He was born at Ronesplass 11. july 1833 and was married 1861 to Jonetta Dortea Karsldatter born at Ulstad in 1832. Children: 1) Kasper born 25 april 1861 confirmated at Ressemplass in 1876 2) Karl, mentioned in the census (1865) as 3 years old, but not found anywhere else 3) Tale Margrete born 25. april 1866
It is uncertain how long Lornts and Jonetta lived at Auriket. They moved out, but unknown where.

I don't find Carl Hammer in the book. Wonder why he used Hammer?
