Among the numerous possibilities, since his mother retained custody, and since Oswald and Rhoda were legally married, that his original name was Robert Lincoln Maarsund.

I'm fairly certain that Donna Hill married Paul Exley. Whether or not she has any descendants, I wasn't able to determine. Her sister Grace had at least 3 children.

Is it known if the whole family (that is Olai, Johanne, besides Olga and Osvald) came to US or not?

Thank you all for this overwhelming information. I see it more clear now. Thanks to all of you. Oswald's son was obviously not aware that his father must have returned to the USA after his alleged stay in Trondheim, Norway. The same som claims he was put up for adoption. what means an adoption in this case? Still living with his mother and "adopted" by the mothers new husband or did he live with new adoptive parents and what where their names? It's still unclear if Oswalds parents Olai and Johanne remained in the USA or repatriated to Norway and when and where they lived and died. According to Oswal's son he was renamed but did he talk about a full or a partly renaming and what was his name before the renaming?

Oswald's parents: As I have understood Oswald and his sister were too young to arrive Canada/America unattended so I presume they must have arrived with someone most likely the parents or....?

If they came in 1912 as appears in one of Anton's posts, Olga would have been 17 certainly old enough to travel on her own. Don't know when Oswald arrived. Since he was sea faring, he could have come into and left many times as his ship arrives and departs before he decides to make it permanent..

Has this been posted already? The family were still in Norway at the 1910 census:

At wedding etc., Gjert Olai Mikkelsen Gjelland's birth location is given as Tysnes, which is located south of Bergen, and there is indeed a Gjelland (also written Gjalland and Hjelland) in Tysnes. His year of birth at mariage and censuses varies (from what I have seen) between 1853 and 1857, but the correct year may be 1851. At least there is a matching baptism at Tysnes that year. #87. Note that the day of birth matces the one in the 1910 census, although to years off.

He is mentioned in the piece about Nera (lower) Gjelland in Tysnes Bygdebok. Clipping.. It says that he was a sailor from 1875 to 1881, sailing on the Mediterranean, the Baltic, to England and to Northern Norway (!). After 1881 there are no traces of him in the sailor rolls, and no local knowledge of his whereabouts. The book also mentions that he left a son out of wedlock at Tysnes, but paid alimony, at least for the first years.
