Would like help in reading a bygdebok passage about - I think - social organization in a rural bygde.

I just cannot picture what sort of groups are being described here.

Bedelag was an old tradition in the Norwegian peasant community. The estates were divided into informal teams ("bedelag"), which consisted of the people from the nearest neighboring farms. At major family events such as baptism, confirmation, wedding and funeral, the bedelag people was invited with the family. In some places everyone from the nearby farms were invited, others by a certain number per farm. The bedelag was also called in for a day when larger work was to be done, such as laying peat roofs.
