Here is Gro in 1865 Census. Farm is Bøen.

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01038073000635

She is likely with her mother and brother.

Here is Knud Tosenden in the 1865 Census. Farm is Brættene.

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01038073000897

His father is Tosten Olsen and his mother is Barbro Hermundsdatter.

I would think that the wedding record must be wrong in listing his father as Knud Olsen.

The farmhistory book does not say much about these people, besides that Knut is from farm Brettatn in Reinli, Valdres, Gro is from farm Bøen, and that the family emigrated to America in 1878. Two of their children died before emigraton; Torstein (1872-1874) and Ole (1875-1877)

. Julia Burns was married to Knut e thompson. From what I'm reading, my great grandmother Julia Burns is really Gulbjorg Knudsdatter?

Thank you everyone. This is such helpful information. If these are my great grandparents, I'm going to see if I can find them through the names you have given me. I guess that is why I was having trouble finding out information is because the names are completely different. Only thing is, there was no Betsy. There was a Matilda who was born in wisconsin.

My grandfather, Thom K. Thompson died in 1958 age of 80. I was only 5 so I never knew anything about his parents except their names.

How did you find this information? I have searched and could not find anything.

I don't think Julie Burns is your great grandmother.

Julia Burns from census-1910 is Guri Eriksdatter, born 24 Sep 1827 in sørflatdalen, Sør Aurdal, Oppland, Norway, dead 30 Jan 1916 Dover, Buffalo, Wisconsin, United States
Although from same place as Knute & Julia Thompson, Julia Burns is much older, but possibly a relative.
You great grandmothers name was Julia Thompson nee Olson, in Norway she was named Gro Olsdatter.

There is a BETSY and a MATHILDA. Betsy was born in Norway and can be found in Montana in 1900, married to a man named Thomas Thomson. Their children are born in Wisc.

Ref Census-1910. (click to enlarge)

Julia Burns ("Guri Eriksdatter") is listed as widow, 82 years old.
Below her is your grandfather Tom K. Thompson, 32, widower.
Below him again is his mother (your great grandmother) Julia Thompson, 67 widow

Census-1910 also says Julia Thompson has 6 children, 4 alive. Those 6 were:
1. Gulbjørg Knudsdatter b. 26 Feb 1868 aka Julia Ericson
2. Barbro Knudsdatter b. 05 Dec 1869 aka Betsy Thomson
3. Torstein (1872-1874)
4. Ole (1875-1877)
5. Torsten Knudsen b. 22 Dec 1877 aka Tom K. Thompson
6. Matilda (1882-)

Julia Burns on the other hand, has 10 children, 9 alive (in 1910).

I found out who she is... Julie Burns is Julia Thompsons' sister-in-law
Julia Burns (aka Guri Eriksdatter) was married to Ole Olsen Bøen, the older brother to Gro Olsdatter Bøen (aka your g.grandmother Julia Thompson). Ole & Guri emigrated in 1852.

We threw a lot of information at you since once we figured out the names that your ancestors used in Norway the data came rather quickly. But here is the basics.

Knute Thompson and Julia Thompson are in Norway Knud Torstensen Brættene and Gro Olsdatter Bøen.

Knud is the son of Torsten Olsen Brættene and Barbro Hermundsdatter and was born Feb 10, 1846 in Sør-Aurdal, Opland Norway.

Julia is the daughter of Ole Bjørnsen Bøen and Kjersti Olsdatter and was born Dec 25, 1842 in Sør-Aurdal, Opland Norway

As stated above the original emigrants are Knute Thompson (called Knud Torstensen Brættene in Norway) and Julia Thompson (called Gro Olsdattter Bøen in Norway}.

They came to America in 1878 and setted in Wisconsin. They had three children with them when they came. The children were Gulbørg born in 1868 who also took the name Julia and who married Gilbert Ericson in 1891. There was also Barbro born in 1869 who was called Betsy and likely married a Thomas Tomassen in 1894. . And the third chid in the party was Torsten born in 1878 who was called Thom K Thompson in America and who married Mary Hendrikson. After the arrival in America, Knute and Julia had another child name Matilda also called Tilda who married a Romeo Knecht.

Now that you know the name that your ancestors are know bu in Norway, you can try and see how far back in time you can carry the family line. With the online records available to today that can usually be some place in the 1700's.

The parents of Knut Tostensen are as stated above Tosten Olsen and Barbro Hermandatter. Here is the family in the 1865 Norwegian Census.

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01038073000894

Tosten was born about 1802 in Sør-Aurdal and Barbro was born about 1802 but in Gol parish, Buskerud.
