Dear Listers!

I have been struggling with this family for many years. There may be no direct descendants, but details are missing which might clear this:

Martine Anna aka Martha F. Vanborg was born illegitimately in LaSalle Co., IL June 17, 1857 and christened at the Perry Lutheran church in Dane Co., WI. Her parents were Anna Monsdotter Urness, born in Hafslo, Norway Feb. 5, 1832 and one Fredrik Vanborg about whom I have no information at all!

In 1890 Martha Vanborg got a patent to a farm in the very Northwestern township in Grand Forks Co., ND, and in 1896 she got a similar patent to a farm in Spruce Grove township, Becker Co., MN where she lived in 1900!

The mother Anna Monsdotter Urness was married in Dane Co., WI Feb. 7, 1864 to Johannes Torstenson Barsness aka John Thompson from Sogndal, Norway (1827-1906). John and Anna farmed in Blue Mounds township, Dane Co., WI, but separated in 1884 and then sold the farm! John moved in with relatives in Naples township, Buffalo Co., WI, while Anna apparently accompanied daughter Martha to Grand Forks Co., ND and later to Becker Co., MN.

But in 1901 Martha sold her farm in Becker Co., MN, and I see nothing neither of her nor of her mother Anna until Martha Vanborg died in Coeur d'Alene, ID on June 22, 1916. Her estate was probated, and according to the Probate court in Kootenai Co., ID the record includes 113 pages, which I have not seen!

Challenges:

** Where did Martha and her mother Anna move in 1901?

** Date and place of Anna's death?

** Can they be found in the 1910 census?

** Who was Fredrik Vanborg?

** In 1900 Anna Thompson is said to be mother of 2 children, but only Martha Vanborg was alive. Any explanation of this? In 1880 Anna and John did have a fosterson John Olson, aged 9, living with them. Could that be the deceased child?

Thanks a million in advance for any assistancxe you can me to solve this family mystery!

Very sincerely yours,

Lars E. Oyane

Not finding much on Fredrik Vanborg.

But here is a Fred Venneberg. He first shows up in Sheboygan, Wisconsin in the1870 Census.

There is a good history on him in the FAG record.

Dear Anton and other Listers!

Thank you very much for interesting messages on this topic!

As far as Fredrik Vanborg is concerned, the Fred Venneberg that you Anton found in Sheboygan, WI and later in Kansas, appears to have emigrated far too late to be a relevant father of Martha.

As far as his name is concerned, I would like for you to study the actual birth record: https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/60722/images/41742_314952-00679?treeid=&personid=&rc=&usePUB=true&_phsrc=Nzx25529&_phstart=successSource&pId=826230

The father's name has by ancestry been interpreted as «Frans Piersen», so how that could end up with Fredrik Vanborg is a good question... Maybe we should look for Franz Vanborg or something similar?

The administrator of Martha's estate in 1916 was her 1st cousin Jacob Wiks. His biography reads as follows (in Norwegian):

Marie Wiks d. same staden 18.3.1958. Dei fekk ti born i lag.

A sister of Jacob's also lived in the same neighborhood, Nellie Koester.

Still it remains a «mystery» what became of Martha Vanborg and her mother after 1901. Did they maybe move back to the farm Martha owned in Elkmont township near Turtle River, Grand Forks Co., ND?

WOOPS: There were relatives of Anna Urness' living south of Spokane, WA, and I wonder if this may be «our» Anna's death certificate from Rockford, Spokane Co., WA Mar. 19, 1910 (age is just a few days off!):

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-XCW9-H6W?

This Urness family lived at Haugen under Urness, and some of these Haugens adopted the HILL name. Anna Thompson's maiden name is given as HILL! (Mary Hill Masterson of Chicago, IL was Anna's niece!)

But if this is the right Anna, where is then Martha Vanborg in 1910?

Can an obituary be found for Anna Thompson in Rockford/Sppokane?

Thanks again for your wonderful assistance in this matter!

Very sincerely yours,

Lars E. Oyane

The difference between the two homesteads Martha got is this:
the one in North Dakota was a cash sale and the one in Becker county was an original entry. So by regulations she was required to live on the one in Becker county, generally five years and make improvements.

So Martha and her mother lived in Becker county in 1895 for a reason:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQ6C-QVV

Who was Bertha Thomas who lived with them?

The census taker Carroll H Clifford went over and above the call of duty. He recorded exact birth places for a lot of the people and the length of residence in the state and length of stay within the census district for everyone, not just the males over 21!

For Anna her residency in Minnesota is recorded as 7 years 2 months and within this district 5 years, 5 mons, For Martha her birthplace was given as Harding, Ill. her stay in Minn was 6 years, 7 mons and within the district 5 years, 5 months (same as her mother). Bertha was born in Candor, Minn, residence in state 11 years 9 mons; within the district 3 years, 6 months. Census was taken 14 June 1895.

In 1900 Martha and her mother are in Becker county:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M99T-96V

Martha's father is listed in that census as having been born in Norway.

Dear Jackie and other Listers!

Thank you very much for your latest message.

I don't quite understand the difference between the two farms. Do you mean to say they never lived in Elkmont township, Grand Forks Co., ND?

As far as Bertha Thomas is concerned, she must have been working out on the farm. She was of German background.

Here she is with her parents:

1885 in Otter tail Co., MN: https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/1058/images/mnsc_35-0642?treeid=&personid=&hintid=&queryId=2db030cc6005896adcc61a399bd50045&usePUB=true&_phsrc=Nzx25550&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&pId=5128468

1900 in Becker Co., MN: https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/7602/images/4120253_00731?usePUB=true&_phsrc=Nzx25551&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&pId=26080555

Thanks again for your great assistance!

Very sincerely yours,

Lars E. Oyane

Coupled with the reported dates of living in Minnesota from the 1895 census, it would appear that neither lived there. Since the land in Grand Forks county was a cash sale, it was a matter resolved in the land office and required no residence. The sale of the land in Grand Forks (after Martha's purchase from the Federal government) would have been recorded in the Grand Forks county courthouse. That date too might be interesting to know.

The original entry homestead in Becker county should have a larger file and more interesting details, such as who lived with her, what structure she put up, how much land she put into production each year and neighbors named as witnesses to the work she had done to accomplish for the proving up. The files are kept at the National Archives in Washington and getting a copy is quite spendy $50/ the last time I ordered.

It definitely looks like Frans in the baptism of Martine, the last name is still very questionable even as Pierson. There is a U marker above one of the last letters. Maybe a name like Preus or Piraeus?

When I look at the record, the first letter of name could also be an T.

Although a longer look might change my mind. None of the T's on the page has the next letter coming out of the T like this one.

Not to mention the P looking different than the other obvious P's on the page.

But to the question. I do think that the Martine Anne is a real candidate for the person of interest in this thread.
