My uncle was born in Arendal on 29 April 1911, male child of Hanne and Aksel Berntsen. Baptized "Alf Berntsen" 6 Aug 1911, Arendal.
Died 18 Aug 1911, Arendal, buried 23 Aug 1911. Alf was four months old. Would his cause of death be available?

The funeral will take place from the chapel on Wednesday at 1 p.m.

Curious how the newspaper death notice was found. Are the files searchable by date or name? Is it a pay site that would be accessible from US? What newspapers and dates are available? Is Vestlandske Tidende a national paper or local to Arendal? Is there a paper that would have notices from Drammen area?

If you google Norwegian National Library , that should get you to the home page. Use the search engine there and when the results are posted there will be books, newspapers (aviser), pictures, city directories, magazines. Most books are available only to Norwegian IP addresses or libraries in Norway. But a lot of years of newspapers are available.
Some Drammens Tidende do pop up, Buskeruds Blad, Ringerikes Blad and a lot of those people are covered in Oslo papers as well. |

Looks like the word is something like Acut asteni (acute asthenia)? |

I searched for "Hanne Berntsen" in all newspapers from August 1911.
Vestlandske Tidende was a local newspaper from Arendal (1832-1973).
Half a million newspapers are available, from various times and regions. Some have limited accessability, e.g. only available from libraries or universities.
Under region Viken (formerly Buskerud) you will find a number of local newspapers from the Drammen area.

| Many thanks to all of you, for new sources and especially for finding the newspaper clipping! It is indeed my Grandmother, Hanne Hansen Berntsen, published the day after her baby Alf died. Neither my older sister, or myself, had ever heard of this child, we only knew of her other three children, one of whom was my father. The news announcement struck me as full of sorrow - her husband Aksel was a seaman in those years and must have been away when the child died. Again, thank you Heritage helpers. |

May I request help with one more search? I was tracing my Great-Grandparents, and after their listing in the 1910 Norway Census, I don't know have another hint, or dates of their deaths. In that 1910 census I found they were living in Arendal, district -'Langsae Kreds 14". They are: Hans Hansen, b. 22 Dec 1841, Molde, Norway, then age 69, (his name showed as Hans Hansen Hjelseth. His wife was listed there as Ellemine Kristine Hjelseth, age 50. She was born 11 Sept 1860 in Sogne, Norway, as Ellemine Kristine Tormundsdatter.

Vår kjære mor, svigermor og bestemor Ellemine Kristine Hansen gikk inn til hvilen idag. Arendal, 16-6 1949. Hanne, Klara, Inga, Agathe Barn (U.S.A.) Augusta Hansen, svigerdatter.
Begravelsen foregår fra kapellet mandag kl. 1.
Byens kirkegård.
Our dear mother, mother-in-law and grandmother Ellemine Kristine Hansen went to rest today. Arendal, 16-6 1949. Hanne, Klara, Inga, Agathe Children (U.S.A.)
Augusta Hansen, daughter-in-law.
The funeral will take place from the chapel on Monday at 1.
The city cemetery. |

| Clipping from 1912/13 address book for Arendal. Paraplymaker means umbrella maker. This was also the occupation given in the 1910 census. |

Thank you 'jwiborg', that is indeed my Great-Grandmother Ellemine, the announcement listing my Grandmother Hanne and her 3 sisters who were in the USA.! I have had a large photo of Ellemine, given to me in 1970, and hoped to learn something about her - now I know she lived to be 88 yr, buried in Arendal. I appreciate your search, thank you.
And thank you "ToreL", yes that is my Great-Grandfather the umbrella maker. So I know he was alive at least until 1912/1913 from the address book of Arendal. |

Good afternoon Heritage community. I have two more queries.
1) I would like to find the death date for my Great-Grandfather, Hans Hansen. Here is what I know about him: Born 22 Dec 1841 in Molde. In 1910 he resided in Arendal, Aust-Agder, district Langsae Kreds 14, per the Norway Census. He was married to Ellemine Kristine, and was the father of Hanne, Hans August, Karl Torinius, Clara, Inga and Hedvig Agathe. His name often shows as Hans Hansen Hjelseth - I presume the Hjelseth was the name of his family farm/property. His parents were Hans Hansen Hjelseth and Aagot Roesdatter. I would mainly like help checking the death registers for 1921/1922. I think he must have been alive in 1921, because when his daughter sailed to the USA she listed Hans Hansen, father, as her contact in Norway. He MAY have died in 1922 because another daughter who was in the USA for a few years then sailed back to Norway, leading me to think if Hans was about 81 yr. old then, he may have been ill or died.
2) I was hoping to find a listing of ferry boat captains, for the year 1909, who would have worked in/around the Tvedstrand/Arendal area. Is that available in perhaps a register of certified maritime workers??
