Dear Listers!
The Norway-Heritage site has shown some great results in the past, so now I am ready to try another «challenge»:
Amund Martin URNES was born in Buffalo Co., WI Feb. 20, 1883 as son of Ole Jorgenson URNESS (1846-1888) and Guro «Julia» Johnson (1852-1907). Several descendants of this family are quite interested in family history, buut NOONE ever managed to figure out what really happened to «uncle» Martin!
What we know:
* was in 1910 still farming the home farm in Buffalo Co., WI: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GYBM-S7QC
* was in 1912 residing at Chester, MT
* was in 1918 a fireman at a copper mining company at Great Falls, MT
* not found in Montana 1920, but one Martin Urness aged 21(!) was 1920 in Kansas City, MO!: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9RFS-9PS
* was in 1940 residing «divorced» in Kansas City, MO: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-89MB-YNK7
* shows up just about every year in Kansas City, MO city directories between 1920 and 1941, nut never with a wife!
* in 1914 he homesteaded in Liberty Co., MT S13, T34, R4 – with wife Bertha he sold this land in 1948, but was then also a resident of Kansas City, Mo.: https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=1246&h=8554705&tid=&pid=&queryId=729774a5095659e36cd3fcc40048862b&usePUB=true&_phsrc=Nzx26079&_phstart=successSource
* He worked for many years at a power utility company in Kansas City, MO where he died Dec. 21, 1973 - his will shows no wife and no children
We BELIEVE Martin was married twice, and divorced twice, but further detais are completely unknown!
I would be very happy if anyone can manage to locate further information about «uncle»Marftin, and thank you very much in advance for any suggestions!
Very sincerely yours, |

1942 WWII registration card also lists a Kansas city, MO address and employment at Kansas city power & light co. Person to contact Delaney Hutchings at "same address." Delaney as a first name is mostly for women, I believe... (?) |

Amund Martin Urnes should not be confused with Ambjørn Matthew Urnes, also a Wisconsinite, but born in 1901. He had children with wife Cora in Minnesota in the 1920ies. Here is his WWII registration card.

Dear Tore, Jackie and other Listers!
Thank you very much for your comments on Amund Martin URNES and his destiny! That travel report from 1939 was indeed interesting reading!
However, we are still «kind of stuck» when it comes to the question of Martin's possible marriage(s). But I would like to ask you the following:
Could it indeed be that Martin married his Bertha while living in Montana prior to 1919, but that they were separated without getting a divorce until after 1948, thus giving Bertha a right to sign the deed (and take the money…?)?? What does the US legislation say about this way of acting?
Or is it so, that since they were not yet legally divorced, her signature was necessary on the deed?
Anxiously waiting to hear your opinion on this, I remain,
Very sincerely yours, |
