Dear Listers!

Henry William Nelson, born in Vernon Co., WI Feb. 14, 1882 (WW1 draft says 1881!), was the son av Hans Nelson (1842-1911) and his 2nd wife Jane L. Clark (1862-1937).

Henry married in Viroqua, WI Oct. 15, 1913 to the widow Charlotte Jeannette aka Lottie nee Chalk, born Aug. 4, 1871 - the daughter of John and Hannah Chalk. Lottie's birth place varies between MN, IA and WI and is thus a big «mystery». She was first married to Harrison Raymond Abbey from Vernon Co., WI.

In 1913 Henry and Lottie moved to Portland, Multnomah Co., OR where Lottie died May 24, 1956. However, she was divorced from Henry some time in the mid-1920's, and Henry supposedly moved in with his halfsister Della May Kellar (1879-1937) at Fern Hill, Columbia Co., OR and is thought to have died there. Both his sister and his mother died in 1937, and Henry died BEFORE them, but when and where? An additional note: His mother Jane was known during prohibition as the biggest «boot layer» in Columbia Co., OR! She smoked a pipe and wore whiskers! Quite a lady!

So we have two challenges here:

* Exact place of birth of Charlotte Jeanette «Lottie» CHALK?

* Exact date and place of death of Henry William NELSON?

Thanks a million in advance for any assistance you can give me in this matter!

Very sincerely yours,

Lars E. Oyane

Someone has included a short bio on Charlotte in FAG:
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/23046314/charlotte-j-abbey_nelson

Was she LDS? If so she may be this Charlotte Chalk Nelson who was born in Manchester, Delaware county, Iowa:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:DL9Q-8MZM

Her 1948 voting record gives a birthplace as Manchester, Iowa:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:7Y55-9RZM
and several other years:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:7YRC-L8N2
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:7YRC-L8PZ

His WWI draft registration card says he has a defect in his right eye and that he is presently not working due to ill health.

A possible death for Henry from the Portland Oregonian Thurs 24 April 1947 page 13 col 2:
"Two die in rooms
Two men found dead in their rooms Tuesday died of natural causes, the coroner's office reported Wednesday. They were John Reagan, 79, of 1336 S.W. Market Street and Henry W. Nelson, 65, of 1616 N Benton Street."

Dear Jackie and other Listers!

Thank you very much, Jackie, for wonderful research!

Delaware Co., IA must be correct as far as Lottie's birthplace is cncerned. That's also what her marriage record to Harrison Abbey shows: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XR25-F4T

Now to Henry William Nelson. The mother's obituary from 1937 (which I am unable to find at this time - Jane, Mrs. Henry W. B. Hankins, died Feb. 2, 1937 at Warren, Columbia Co., OR - where she moved a few months earlier from Fern Hill, Columbia Co., OR) does NOT mention Henry as a surviving child. Maybe someone can refind this obituary to verify this?

Otherwise that Henry W. Nelson who died in Portland, OR Apr. 22, 1947 looks suspiciously like «our» Henry!!

Thanks again for your wonderful assistance!

Very sincerely yours,

Lars E. Oyane

WOOPS:

I just discovered there was another Henry W. Nelson in Portland, OR at the same time, who born in Kansas in 1882: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VRT1-Y7J

I wonder if that could be the Henry who died in 1947?

Very sincerely yours,

There are numerous Henry Nelson who died in Oregon between 1920 and 1937. The 1947 one is listed only as possible, but there isn't enough information to accept him or reject him as target Henry.

Dear Jackie and other Listers!

Thank you very much, Jackie, for your latest message! I am fully aware of the challenge searching for Henry Nelson in the Oregon death index, particultay when no middle name shows up for many of the entries in the indexes. He supposedly died in Columbia Co., OR, and since I don't find him in the 1930 census living with his mother or his sister, maybe he died before?

Can someone, to verify whether Henry was then still alive, help me find the obituaries of:

* Mother Jane HANKINS, died Feb. 2, 1937 at Warren, Columbia Co., OR

* Sister Della KELLAR, died Oct. 20, 1937 at Fern Hill, Coumbia Co., OR

And one extra question has appeared:

* Henry Ward Beecher HANKINS (1872-1954) divorced his 1st wife Olcie in Columbia Co., OR in August 1928 (due to desertion!), and by the time of the 1930 census he was remarried to Jane Clark NELSON (1863-1937). Can someone please help me locate this marriage?

Thanks again for your wonderful assistance completing this biography!

Very sincerely yours,

Lars E. Oyane

Here is a possible Henry Nelson:
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/56536454/henry-nelson

There are several Nelson named people in the 1930 census schedules of the Eastern Oregon State Hospital taken in April 1930 but none named Henry, which should mean this Henry is a later than April arrival at the hospital is counted elsewhere probably in Oregon in the census. This hospital was established to help with overcrowding in the State Hospital at Salem and also for residents of the eastern counties of Oregon.

Ancestry has a database covering the state registry of marriages in Oregon from 1906-1968. Henry W.B. Hankins' first marriage in Columbia county is there but I haven't found the marriage to Jane. Columbia county is on the border with Washington state and checking the marriage records at the Secretary of State of Washington's digital archive site finds no marriage for Henry W.B. Hankins and Jane. The Ancestry database of Oregon divorces begins in 1925 -1968 and appears to be no Henry Nelson / Lottie or Charlotte divorces in it.
