Hello! Thanks for reading this.

I am researching my late grandmothers family. My gran was born in London 1940, to Edgar Linden. He was born 1882 to Antoinette Hansen (from Halden, Norway) and Chrysanthus Spettel (from Prussia).

I've made some good progress on the tree to date but im really struggling to break down some brick walls im coming across at the moment so reaching out for some help or guidance.

Antoinette was born 1850 in Halden, Ostfold. Her father was Hans Andreas Hansen and her mother Else Dorthea Pedersdatter. I believe Hans Andreas was born 1819 to Hans Arvesen and Elisabeth Gundersdatter. I found a marriage for Hans and Elisabeth which gave a birth date for Hans and then i was able to track down one individual who matched. Hans Arvesen born 1797 to Arve Nielsen and Anne Simonsdatter. Through Anne Simonsdatter i believe my tree to be linked to the Grinder farm in Aremark which has allowed me to use the book "Slekten Fra Grinder I Aremark" to trace this line back to the 1600s. Unfortunately, the book traces a line that doesnt lead to my direct ancestors, focusing instead on a great uncles line down to the 1940s.

As a result, i have as of yet been unable to find anything on Hans Arvesen's brothers - Simon, Peder and Niels. I'm hoping to be able to trace these lines down in order to find a DNA link to confirm this family line. Interestingly though I believe Hans Arvesen's other child - a daughter Elen Andrine (born 1821) married into the Elvestad family and one of her descendants was journalist Karl Elvestad. The brothers however, are my first brickwall.

My second brickwall is the maternal line of Antoinette Hansen. I know her mother was Else Dorthea Pedersdatter. Her marriage to Hans Andreas Hansen records her coming from Berg and i was able to find a matching record in Berg. Else born to Peder Pedersen and Christina Olsdatter. I searched for a marriage record in the digital arkive for this couple and came across one in 1817. It lists Peder's residence as Vohlen and Christina's as Svegaard. Given how common Peder Pedersen as a name is i am reluctant to follow hints on ancestry, findmypast etc. A search for Vohlen has returned no similar records for Peder and Svegaard has returned nothing for Christina. The marriage record i found also did not show parents names so i have no way of moving past these guys!

Any guidance here would be massively appreciated - sorry for the long post!

Good detail!

#5 marriage in 1817:
Aremark prestekontor Kirkebøker, SAO/A-10899/G/Ga/L0001: Klokkerbok nr. I 1, 1814-1834, s. 4-5
Brukslenke for sidevisning: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20061018030622

Vohlen and Svegaard are farms and in someone's name they are essentially an address. Both the bride and the groom are such an age as they should be counted in the 1801 census.

For Peder there is a possible listed in Aremark in 1801:
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01058198002151

He and his twin are illegitimate sons of Pernille Gulbransdatter.

For Christine there are 22 possibles with the approximate birthyear in the 1801 census:
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/search/persons/advanced?from=&to=&jt%5B%5D=13&firstname=christin*&lastname=Olsd*&birth_year_from=1787&birth_year_to=1789&birth_date=&birth_place=&domicile=&position=&event_year_from=&event_year_to=&event_date=&related_first_name=&related_last_name=&related_birth_year=

Thank you for the possible Peders and Christines - certainly gives me some bits to look at.

Patronymic and address based surnames are cool but when people start moving to new farms and naming their children after themselves it can be a bit of a minefield.

Peder and Christine seem to have had another child in 1828. Farm name for Christine is Bodhangen in that record. Kristine Albertine.

According to the marriage link Peder Pedersen was born about 1792. I did not see a good match in the parish of Aremark, but there is a Peder Pedersen born about 1791 in the 1801 Census for Berg. He is living with his mother and her second husband.

Mother is named Berte Henriksdatter.

Thank you - Berg would make sense given where Else was born - they ended up in Idd afterwards. Perhaps Vohlen was in Berg.

The Peder born in 1791 has the farm name of Svalsgaard.

Look at the original record about seven down left column

I had a look on a wiki page that someone has populated with Farm names from Ostfold.

These are the closes two i can find to Vohlen:

124 Volen Ømark Aremark Smaalenenes 124 Volen Øymark Østfold
97 Vølen Trøgstad Trøgstad Smaalenenes 97 Aamodt Lille Trøgstad Østfold

Im wondering if the farm name against Christine is Svegaard - its so hard to make out.

Based on the above farms perhaps it is Aremark and my Peder Pedersen is one of the twins - ill trace these lines down as far as i can and see if i can find a match
