Hey,

My 5th cousin 1x removed reached out to me today. She is trying to find out more about her great-great-grandfather Johan Ludvig Ottesen, father of Marius Peter Ottesen, and Johan's brothers. Since I have limited time, I have also posted everything that I got so far. I will dedicate some more time all of this in the next week, unless you all beat me to it.

Main Questions:

  • When and Where did Johan die?
  • When and Where did Alfred die?

Father: Otto Johansson
Mother: Abela Joha Andersdotter
Death: 27 Jan 1952 in Wisconsin, Jackson, Minnesota, USA

Married to Elise Benson there and had 4 boys.

No additional information.

Last, some notes from her:

Johan may have traveled to the US with the name Johnson since that name was used in the census (appendix) and when Ferdinand died. I am unsure of the name Ottesen. My great-grandfather's name was Ottesen, but they all came from Sweden and there they have different spellings. (Ottoson, Ottosson).

Thanks,
Simon

Her answers so far to those questions are:

When and where did Johan die?
My great-great-grandfather Johan has disappeared without a trace. Everyone who searches his family says that he died in 1890 at the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. Well I think he didn't. He stands as godfather on 10 May 1891 and traveled to the USA on 24 July 1891. I do not know where and when he died.

When and where did Alfred die?
I have nothing on Alfred. Only that he traveled to the USA on March 30, 1888. I have searched all I can and can't find anything on him.

When and where did Malcolm die?
I think Malkolm died in 1913, but I'm a little unsure. His wife Mina Alette I believe died in 1940 and was buried "Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa, USA" These are uncertain sources, but the only ones I have to start from.

This family has sunk into the ground. These are hard to find since they changed their names when they emigrated. I'll look through the papers to see if I can find anything else there. If so, I'll scan and send over.

Comment (Me): 1890 in South Africa is certainly wrong, since he appears on the 1891 census below with his son and her great-grandfather Marius Petter. So given that the Digital Archive does not show immediately anything after this census, he could have certainly traveled or emigrated to the USA, like his siblings.

Okay, since I live right here, I will drive over there and take a picture of the lot real quick. Appreciate Jackie!

Did not find a gravestone where it suppose to be, so I assume it’s unmarked.

However, I did find all of Malcolm Edwin Blom's family and forwarded everything to her, with your help of course. Now only need Johan and Alfred. In all records, of Malcolm, there was no Johan.

This is likely the FAG of Martin and family. The newspaper clipping indicates a few more children than four. But only four are listed in the FAG record.

Good work so far Anton! I'll look some more into Alfred tomorrow! I don't see much of a match other than the first name and him maybe taking on the last name of his father? Is that normal? So I wouldn't be able to confirm whether that's truly him?

I also ran across this record, which mentions Sophia Ottosen death, 2 days later on the 26 Jul 1891 in Hull, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom with Ludvig Ottosen. I think this is our couple?

But I don't think Ludvig died just yet, but it would explain why I did not see any Sophia with the other Ludvigs in the US. He is now traveling as a single man?

Hey Anton,

So given the record, I just noticed that it says that this Alfred was 37. I took a look at the original record, and it is clearly a 37, so I do not think that this person is our Alfred. This Alfred is also traveling with two other family members.

https://ibb.co/nLY3x05

I also noticed that for our Olaf Ferdinand Ottosen, who supposedly is Ferdinand Johnson, that the Illinois, U.S., Deaths and Stillbirths Index, 1916-1947 gives:

Name E. Ferdinand Johnson
Birth 3 Apr 1863 Dalslander, Sweden
Death 11 Apr 1929 Sterling, Whiteside, Ill
Burial 1 May 1929 Chicago, Cook, Ill.

So given that our Ferdinand was assumedly born on 22 Oct 1863 according to Sweden, Indexed Birth Records, I assume that we may have another error here?

I am not 100% sure, but it looks like Olof Ferdinand went to America on 12 Sep 1884 in this 1886-1890 census, if the translation plays out? However, it appears that he came back and lived in Lur in 1891, but then an event happen on 24 Nov 1891? I can't make it out, see below.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSG4-MSLL-W?cc=2790465&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AQLPG-CTB2 br /

Is the event that it referring to as here?

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSG4-MSLY-F?cc=2790465&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AQLP2-PGN8

What does this mean? Does this mean that he got married on 24 Nov 1893 in America?

https://ibb.co/zZVVkm9

So according to the House Household Examination Books below and the Sweden, Emigrants Registered in Church Books, 1783-1991

Alfred Ottosson Departed Lur on 7 Oct 1881 to Norway

This record mentions Johan Ludvig Ottesen, his wife, and Marius Petter in 1897, but I am not quite sure what this record is used for or what it means? Third column maybe says that the Father is dead?
