So given that our Ferdinand was assumedly born on 22 Oct 1863 according to Sweden, Indexed Birth Records, I assume that we may have another error here?

The more I dig into the life of the 2nd Brother Olaf Ferdinand Ottesen, the more I think he is not the same man as died 11 Apr 1929 in Sterling, Whiteside, Illinois, USA. What gives me pause is the mention of the brother Martin coming to the funeral in Chicago.

That man is Eric Ferdinand Johnson married to Anna, with children Myrtel, Hazel and Lillian. He lived in Butte Montana in 1910, part of 1920 and then his wife and some children lived in Chicago in 1930.

This must be Martin in 1900 Census, living in Dunn County Wisconsin. Although it says that Helmar was born in Norway but I do not know if that makes any sense.

Martin Johnson
Census • United States Census, 1900

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MMKX-1J9

1905 Wisconsin Census shows Helmar or Elmer being born in Minnesota. Makes more sense since there is a marriage record for Martin and Elsie Bnesnen in Minnesota.

Yes, Anton, this is what I also concluded, glad you dug a little deeper and confirmed. I'd say the only thing confirmed thus far is that Olof Ferdinand Ottoson (Ottesen) emigrated or departed to America on 12 September 1884. I also know that Martin appears to have taken on the name Johnson, however his brother Malcolm chose the name Blom. Therefore, I personally wouldn't place that much weight on that name. I am also fairly certain about Martin and Elise of it being correct.

It appears there are a lot of errors in the folklore that was passed on to my 5th cousin.

Interesting Jackie, my 5th cousin now sent me an email saying that Johan Ludvig was still alive in 1905 given Peter Ottesen's marriage record:

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/view/327/pv00000004404845

However, given your record, he is dead by 1907? So the previous record in 1897 must be an error?

She also said that he was a journeyman shoemaker, so she thinks it is strange that he would go on a boat as a sailor with his wife and children at home; also given that his youngest son was born in 1890.

Here is also the death record of his Wife Emilie Ottesen f. Larsen on 18 Apr 1924. Not sure what it says in the notes.

Okay so who is Otto Ludvig Ottesen a sailor the father of Julie Josefine?

Marriage # 47 matros Ludvig Ottosen and Emilie Larsd
Fredrikstad domkirkes prestekontor Kirkebøker, SAO/A-10906/F/Fa/L0001: Ministerialbok nr. 1, 1871-1878, s. 296
Brukslenke for sidevisning: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20060927070487

Birthdate and place matches Johan Ludvig Ottosen provided at beginning.

And just because there is no notation on Petter's marriage that his father is dead doesn't mean that he isn't.

And Emilie is a widow in the 1900 census:
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01037045113508

The notes on Emilie's death record in the far right column a cross (standing for ) death at Ulleval hospital Sogneprest Thomassen.

Well, as you may know, Julie's brother is called Otto Ludvig Ottesen, I assume someone got something confused. She may never know that his first name was Johan, but I am not sure.

But I agree, so then as of now, he died between 1891 and 1900?
