My great grand parents were married in Nordmannvik around 1874. They were Karl Hess and Kristen Marie Marcussen. They had five children.
Louise Caroline Hess, born in 1874 in Norway, my grand mother.
Carl Martin Hess
Martin Carlsen Hess (children Clifford, Doris and James)
Clara Hess (Child: Audrey Dahl)
Charles Hess (Children: Raymond, Bradford and Eveln)
Martin Hess (Children: Adelaid and Mildred Einerson)
I am trying to get information about Karl Hess and Kristen Marcussen and their ancestors in Norway.
My father had told be that they emigrated from Haugasund

I was stunned to find your post just now. I also have been trying to find information on Karl Hess and his family. My father-in-law (Stanley) is the son of Clara Hess & Kristoffer Dahl, brother to Audrey Dahl Smith. I do have some information and would love to share with you what I have found.

It is my impression the the Hess family came from the Bergen area and most likely date back to the time of the Hansiatic League. The name sounds more German than Norwegion.
The earliest individuals I know of on the Hess side are Karl Martin Hess and his wife Johanne Marie Wolmer (no birth, death or marriage dates. They are the parents of Carl (Karl) Johann Hess (b. 12 Feb 1850 in Bergen City, Hordaland County; d. 223 Oct 1922, Brooklyn NY)
He married Kristen Marie Markussen (b. 29 Jul 1851 in Dypvag parish, Aust-Agder County; d. Nov 1925 Brooklyn NY) the daughter of Mikkel Markusen ( no birth date; died at sea 27 April 1854) and Karen Jensdatter (b. 1822 Gjerstad parish; no date of death or marriage date).
Their daughter was Louis Karolin Hess (b. 29 Jul 1876, Dypvag parish, Aust-Ager County; d, 06 May 1934)
Mikkel Markussen and Karen Jensdotter had another child, Jon Bjorn Mikkelsen (b. 1849; d. 1854). He was born in Nordmanvik farm, Dypvagparish. I have no information on how Mikkel and Karen met, he from Bergen and she from Aust-Ager but they evidently moved to her home. I have a picture of the farm set to me by the National Archives of Norway. It appears that it might have been some sort of a co-op.
Several years ago when I was in Norway I visited the historical centers in Bergen and the city of Haugesund but I had not yet had enough information to ask the right questions.
I have corresponded with Susan Widell the daughter of Doris Hess and granddaughter of Martin Hess and Hanna Andersen. She has been able to identify some of the people in the later times but any further back then I have recounted above.
I have very many photographs, some identified but many not. These are both separate and some are in scrapbooks dating from the 1890s to the 1920s. Do you have that large photo of the Hess family taken around 1917-18? I have one and all the people in the picture are identified. I am not sure that I can attach any files to this system but I could do that my direct email. My e-mail address is rbergg@aol.com of want to use it.

All of this information is so exciting. I have been at a standstill on this side of the family for several years. My father-in-law (Stanley Dahl) will be so excited when I share all the information that has been given.

You are welcome.
I first made some lookups in northern Norway where 5 farms Nordmannsvik are located in Lyngen parish, when the new information from Rbergg appeared it cleared up.

In 1865 it was 55 Hess and 5 Wolmer in Norway
In 1900 it was 71 Hess and 6 Wolmer in Norway.

Today there are 221 Hess and 13 Wolmer living in Norway found in Kvasir. Søk means go.
