I am looking for any information on the family names "Bakken" and "Kandal" they both immgrated from different areas in Norway and came to Alberta Canada.

Bakken is my Grandfather's name and his parents (Nils and Ingeborg (Svien) Bakken) came from Norway and ended up mostly in farming towns in Alberta. This was a farming family, they emigrated in 1905 area.

Kandal is my grandmother's name (her parents Knut Olson and Nellie ( Lofthus) Kandal ) and they as well came from Norway but they travelled through Canada ( Saskatchewan , Alberta, British Columbia) and through Minnesota and Great Falls Montana.
My Grt. Grandfather Kandal was a minister so they went to areas that he could minister at.

If anyone is familiar with these names or can help me please get in touch with me.
Thank you

Hi there-You can find some info on Bakkens at some good databases on www.genealogy.com and www.rootsweb.com.
type in the surname of Mandt and browse through the results. You will find
Dakota Territory Norwegians
Ancestors of the Dakota Territory Norwegians
The Felland, Mandt, and Reindal Families

Many of my ancestors (lived in Canada)were Bakkens but we know them by other names such as Dalen, Reindal, Felland, etc... because these are farm names that changed when people moved to different farms, like we change our addresses when we move.

You can also find them under:
Bakke
Bachen
and there were Bakken farms in other areas of Norway so it may take a bit of digging for you to be sure if this is the right branch.
Best to you,
cindy

I think there is at least to Kandal families, possibly three, wich are from Breim, Nordfjord, a place called Kandal. I think Nellie ( Lofthus) Kandal are from one of the other families. My Kandal family consist of some farms, some teachers, in the last century some of them also became journalists, musicians, and people with akademic skills. My great grandfather was Ola Kandal, he was married to Mari Reed, Ola Kandals father again was Tor Kandal (I don't remember the name of his wife), and his father again was (I think) Ole Kandal.

Hi,

From Norske Lutherske Prester i Amerika, by O. M. Norlie,pg 553:

"Kandal, Knut Olsen
ord. 1913 Forenede Kirke 1913-
f. i Breim, Nordfjord, Bergen 25 Aug 1885 af Ole Rasmussen K. og Kristiane (f. Knutsen Ness), frekv. Breims fortsaettelesesskole, 99-00
udv. 04, frekv. Concordia Coll. Moorhead, 04-10, U.C. sem. 10-13 (C.T.)prest, Shell Brook, Sask, 13-."

Knut may not have been married by the time of publication of the Prester book (about 1915) as there is no wife listed with him.

Also he is listed in the pastor's list in Folke Kalender 1924 published by Augsburg Publishing House on page 93 as:

"Kandal, K.O.; 1913; Admiral, Sask, Can."

Interesting that your name is very similar to Knut's mother's name. Olav Kandal, previous responder, is on point!

Hilsen,
Jackie M.
