There is another Østereide family in a passenger list from 1870. (#140-144) The father, Gjert Larsen, is almost certainly a brother of Tore Larsen (b. 1825) and Lars Larsen (b. 1846). Gjert was born at Stueland in 1836. (#8) This family lived with Gjert's inlaws at Hjelmeland in 1865, but according to Ølen bygdebook they moved to Østre Eio/Eide in Ølen already the next year, where the two younger children were born in 1866 and 1869. According to Ølen bygdebook, they emigrated in 1870.

family tree of Gjert Larson:
https://www.familysearch.org/tree/pedigree/landscape/94CB-WLD

Looks like most of the children in this family were born in Illinois. Good place to look for the old folks.

Thank you for these last messages. I did not have Gjert Larsson in the Lars T. Stuland and Britte Jonsdotter family! It has been interesting to me that Gjert (George) Larson emigrated to the USA in 1870 and after spending some time in Illinois moved to northern Iowa and remained the rest of his life. He is buried in the West Cemetery, Rale, Iowa which is only about 8 miles from where we live. In fact, I knew George's grandson. He has passed away several years ago. But, a small world. Thank you for finding this person for me, BUT, I do think that Lars and Britte just fell off the face of the earth! I did find the marriage of their daughter, Anna, who married a Lars Larson in Grundy Co., Ill. in 1892. Although Lars's and Martha's names are listed as parents I cannot find any information on them in the states. Thank you again!

Hm, your mention of Grundy County, Ill, caught my eye. There is a naturaliztion record for one Lars T. Stueland there in 1884. I didn't consider it very significant at first -- there are other Stuelands around -- but your new reference makes it more interesting. Perhaps you could post some link or similar for the marriage you mention?

The Stueland matches above seem to fit another family that emigrated in 1870. Just enter surname Stueland at the passenger search at this site:

167 Thore Larsen Stueland 42 m residence Kvindherred
168 Marie !! Stueland 38 f wife* residence Kvindherred*
169 Kari Thoresdatter Stueland 10 f daughter* residence Kvindherred*
170 Lars Thoresen Stueland* 7 m son* residence Kvindherred*
171 Samson Thoresen Stueland* 5 m son* residence Kvindherred*
172 Anne Thoresdatter Stueland* 2 f daughter* residence Kvindherred*
173 Mariane Thoresdatter* Stueland* ½ f daughter* residence Kvindherred*

But this is strange; I can find no Tore Larsen at Kvinnherad born just a few years after Carol's (husband's?) ancestror Tore Larsen, born 1825. On the other hand, there is one Tore Samsonsen, who fits rather well. Here he is with family at Stueland in the 1865 census:

001 Thore Samsonsen 01 39 Kvindherred Prgj. - Husfader g Gdbr Selveier
002 Mari Larsdatter 01 34 Kvindherred Prgj. - hans Kone g -
003 Lars Thorsen 01 4 Kvindherred Prgj. - deres Søn ug -
004 Samson Thorsen 01 1 Kvindherred Prgj. - deres Søn ug -
005 Kari Thorsdatter 01 7 Kvindherred Prgj. - deres Datter ug -
006 Samson Thorsen 02 68 Kvindherred Prgj. - hans Fader g Føderaadsmand
007 Anna Jensdatter 02 62 Kvindherred Prgj. - hans Moder g Føderaadskone

My guess is that his 68 years old (in 1865) father Samson Thorsen is an older brother of the Lars Thorsen who emigrated in 1871, 71 years old.

Looks like the transcription for Passenger Lists on Norway Heritage is incorrect. Should be as you have found that Mari Larsdatter married Thore Samsonsen in 1855 in Kvinnherad, Hordaland, Norway.

In America Thore used almost exclusively the name Thor or Thore Stueland, so the error did not show up. However in one record he is listed as Thor S Stueland.

Thor S Stueland
in the U.S., Naturalization Record Indexes, 1791-1992 (Indexed in World Archives Project)
Name: Thor S Stueland
Birth Place: Sweden; Norway
Court District: Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa
Date of Action: 31 Oct 1885

He was born on 30 Jan 1827. Father was Samson Thorsen and mother was Anna Jensdatter.

Nr. 15

The Ancestry.com family trees I have looked at also have the error of his name, but do have the right parents. It should have been noted that a son of Samson Thoresen Stueland should not have had the last name of Larsen.

Here is a short version of one of them.

It seems that all of these families go back to Tore Samsonsen born about 1771.

Lars T Stueland 1862 married Anna Hatteberg

Thore Larsen Stueland 1827 married Marie Larsdatter Omvik

Samson Toresen Stueland 1798 married Anna Jensdatter Roysland

Tore Samsen Stueland 1771 married Anna Larsdatter Lund

1801 Census

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01058374000392

In the 1801 Census the father is also listed

Samson Torsen born about 1731.

Looks pretty clear that the person in question was indeed a Thore Samsonsen, but without access to the original passenger list it is hard to say when and where the error sneaked in. The list has also been transcribed by employees at the Norwegian National archives, and the result is the same:
