Hello I am trying to find some information on my great-grandfather whose name was Hans Kostad. He was born in Norway and my grandmother said that he came from the area of Christiani (now Oslo I believe). I know that his fathers name was Nils and on the grave his last name is spelled Kaastad. Hans is buried in Lignite, North Dakota, but I'm not sure if he went straight to North Dakota when he came or not. I would like to try and find out what his mothers name was and if a family list or list of members in his family or a least living on the same farm could be found. Hans's father is also buried in Lignite, North Dakota, but I don't think his wife ever came to America, she possibly died in Norway. Any help would be appreciated! -Tim Larson |

Some dates would be helpful, what century are you talking about?
However, you do not appear to have done all the research you need to do here before trying to cross the pond. Finding everyone in all census', birth/marriage/death records, naturalization records, cemetery records, local historical societies, these all provide information. Yes, this takes time and sometimes cost money but it is necessary. You could find someone whose name matches your names but that does not mean they are the right person. People said they came from major cities because that is where they left from, not necessarily where there were actually from. |

Emigration from Kristiania on 27-May-1892: Hans N. Kaastad (16), from Ullensaker. Destination reads New York, but further investigation shows that his final destination was Madison, Minnesota. Link
This must be his parents in the norwegian 1875-census: Kaastad farm in Ullensaker parish, Akershus county. (just outside Oslo) Nils Engebretsen b. 1837 in Gjerpen & wife Gunhild Marie Johannesdatter b. 1843 in Skedmo. Link Gjerpen is in Skien, Telemark. Skedmo must be Skedsmo in Akershus, neighbouring parish to Ullensaker.
(From the emigration records, Hans looks to be born in 1876 and thus not born yet in census 1875...)
Niels Ingebritsen & Karen Nielsdr Marriage: About 27 DEC 1856, Ullensaker, Akershus, Norway
Anne Kirstine Nilsen Birth: 22 MAR 1857, Ullensaker, Akershus, Norway Parents: Niels Engebretsen & Karen Nielsdr
Elise Caroline Nilsen Birth: 03 FEB 1859, Ullensaker, Akershus, Norway Parents: Niels Ingebrethsen & Karen Nielsdr Ida Marie Nilsen Birth: 20 MAR 1861, Ullensaker, Akershus, Norway Parents: Niels Ingebrethsen & Karen Nielsdr
Engebret Nilsen Christening: About 09 AUG 1863 Ullensaker, Akershus, Norway Parents: Niels Engebretsen & Karen Nielsdr
Nils Ingebrigtsen & Gunhild Marie Johannesdr Marriage: About 17 JUN 1870, Ullensaker, Akershus, Norway
Karen Antonie Nilsen Christening: 11 SEP 1870 Ullensaker, Akershus, Norway Parents: Niels Engebretsen & Gunhild Marie Johannesdr
Johan Nilsen Birth: 10 MAR 1872 Ullensaker, Akershus, Norway Parents: Niels Engebretsen & Gunhild Marie Johannesdr
Nikolai Nilsen Birth: 10 MAR 1872 Ullensaker, Akershus, Norway Parents: Niels Engebretsen & Gunhild Marie Johannesdr Johan Nilsen Christening: 11 OCT 1874 Ullensaker, Akershus, Norway Parents: Niels Engebretsen & Gunhild Marie Johannesdr
Niels is a widower in census-1865, so his first wife Karen must have died 1863-1865. Nils' mother Karen Larsdatter (66) is living with him at census-1865. She's a widow, so Nils' father Engelbret is dead...
Widower, farmer and American citizen Nils E. Kaastad (67) is emigrating to Canada on 24-feb-1905: Link

From the Ellis Island database: Kaastad, Nels E. (55) Kostud, Kaven J. (20) [=Karen Kaastad] Kostud, Hans J. (16) [=Hans Kaastad] Kaastad, Fredrik (11) Kaastad, Ole (9) Kaastad, Nelly (8) All arrived Ellis Island on June 13, 1892 with the ship The ETRURIA, sailing from Liverpool. Destination is Madison, Minnesota. They emigrated together (incl Hans and Karen) from Oslo/Christiania on 27-may-1892: Nils, Fredrik, Ole & Nelly Karen Hans Nils is registered as a widower.
There is also records of one Kaastad,Nils E. (38) arriving in 1914. His residence reads Portall(?), N. Dakota. He is born 1876. This Nils E. Kaastad is naturalized at the District court in Lac Qui Parle, Minnesota, July 1897. He could be a family member...? Madison city is in Lac Qui Parle...
Passenger manifests can be viewed at Ellis Island.

Hans' brother Fredrik Kaastad can be found in several sources at Ancestry.com
World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 Record Fredrik Kaastad Residence: <city>, Burke county, North Dakota
1910 United States Federal Census Record Fredrich Kaastad Birth: abt 1880 Residence: <city>, Burke county, North Dakota
You have to pay to see additional info, but city could be Lignite, which I understand is in Burke county.

I'm finally getting back to this thread to add some information. My great grandfather Hans Kostad went back to Norway looking for a wife and came back with Mina Jacobson in 1914 and they were married in 1916 in Lignite, North Dakota which is in Burcke county. I would like more info on Mina. She died in 1923 from complications with a bursed appendix or childbirth, but my grandmother told me the other day that she heard that Mina didn't have a regular period so she wouldn't have been able to have children. I am also lookiing for more info on John Kostad. He isn't listed as coming with his father and the rest of the kids, but I know that he is buried in Basin, Montana and I heard he was married and his wife is buried in Miles City, Montana but I don't know her name. Please help! |

One other thing. Hans Kostad was born in 1877 not 1876. |

I recently translated an old Norwegian write up about the Kostad's (Kaastad) and it tells all the childrens birth dates and christening dates and matched with everything in the 1875 census! It even tells the birth dates and marriage dates for Nil's two wives! I says that Gunhild was born February 24, 1814 and died on July 31, 1878. How would I be able to find the cemetaries where Nil's two wives are buried? |

There is obviously some mismatches here. Based on the marriage between Nils and his second wife Gunhild Marie Johannesdatter I have found her birth and christening record, see #20 here http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=545&idx_id=545&uid=ny&idx_side=-63 She was an "uægte" child born March 18 1843, christened April 2 1843 in Skedsmo. Her mother was Anne Gulbrandsdatter and father Johannes Andersen and both parents lived at the farm søndre Ringnæs. The Gunhild you refer to and the one I have found records for cannot be the same!!

I will have to compare some of my findings a little further. Is there any possible way to find out if Nils had any brothers? My great uncle told me that he and my grandmother have been to a cemetary in southern Minnesota and there were quite a few Kaastads buried there. But as far as he could figure out they are not relavtives to us. I don't know any of the names at the moment, but if it could be found when other Kaastads left Norway I could maybe discover who these people are. |

Niels parents Engebregt (32 and a half year) and Karen Kirstine (34 years) were married Oct 15 1835, see #33 here http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=7797&idx_id=7797&uid=ny&idx_side=-3 His mothers father was Lars Mathiesen, Fløtterød Engebregt was born at the farm Sølie, his father was Ole Haraldsen and one of the best men, Harald Olsen who lived at Bækkevold, was most likely Engebregts oldest brother . |
