Do you know how far it is from Gjerpen to Ullensaker? What about Engelbregt, could he have had any brothers or sisters? But if he did I suppose they would not have had the Kaastad name...

The driving distance between Søli in Skien, Telemark and Kåstad in Ullensaker, Akershus is 181 km (113 miles).
Today it will take you about 3 hrs by car, but in the 1850's...? Most likely they would have spent at least 25-30 hrs in the wagon behind the horse... 2 days maybe?

You are right, his brothers and sisters would not have had the Kaastad name.
The whole family, without Engelbert (as he was baptized in 1803) in the 1801 census is here http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=3&filnamn=f10812&gardpostnr=57&personpostnr=2085&merk=2085#ovre

Is that the only Kaastad farm in Norway? And, is everyone on that list part of Engelgert's family?

On that 1801 census for the 'Søelie Nedre' farm that Einar gave the link you can only really assume that those persons listed immediately following Englebert's parents (as given earlier in the thread) and indicated as their children are actually family members. Other groupings can just be other persons who lived on the farm and possibly in a separate dwelling.

Hi Ronny,

It appears that "ground zero" for people with the last name Kaastad or Kostad in Minnesota is Lac Qui Parle County. Here are some places you might want to search:

www.mnhs.org
(for Minnesota births and deaths)

http://ftp.rootsweb.ancestry.com/pub/usgenweb/mn/lacquieparle/cemetery/garfield.txt
(this is the address for the Garfield, Minnesota cemetery which has both Kaastad and Kostad names)

Hope this helps!

Jackie M.

It has been quite some time since I have posted on this thread, but I have some new findings.

I have an obituary for Engebret Kostad born July 7, 1863 in Ullensaker, Norway and died Sept. 3, 1938 in Lignite, ND

In his obituary it lists a sister surviving him in Norway, but she is only listed as Mrs. Borgman in Norway.

Is there anyway to try and find out which one of his sisters this would be?

As far as I know he had the following sisters who stayed in Norway.

Anne Kirstine Nilsen Kaastad Born March 22, 1857
Elise Caroline Nilsen Kaastad Born February 3, 1859
Ida Marie Nilsen Born March 20, 1861.

I really don't know how to begin searching for them..

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
