Thanks for the info and link - I have already been there but have only gone through about 10 to 15 links so far. This can easily become an addiction !!- I have been reading all of the basic info from the sights you have mentioned and am now becoming familiar with many Norwegian words. My fingers are numb and my back hurts and my house is a disaster!
My cousin has already completed a very extensive genealogy on my maternal side. Luckily, it is already completed (about five inches thick). She has many original documents and noted all the documentation sites she has used as well as photos and pictures of people and tomestones. The family name is Irish -SULLIVAN ( the most common name in Ireland). Thank God she did it instead of me.

I hope someone can help. I'm trying to find Udna Olsdatter Sandvold's marriage record who is the sister of my great grandfather Tørres Olson Sandvold (See posting dated 22/07/2007) b.02/Dec/1845

Udna was born 20/Aug/1852 in Skaanevik but I have been unable to find a marriage record for her. I have been looking in Hordaland. In the 1965 census she was on Buen Farm/ Skaanevik with her father Ole Tørrissen Sandvold (b. Feb 1811) and her mother Siri Knudsdatter (b. 14/Dec/1817 in Skaanevik. Tørres was not with them at the 1865 census as he was about 20 so would probably be out on his own. I have not found Tørres anywere in the1865 census ????? I wonder where he was? I do have his marriage records to Margrethe Torbornsdatter and the 1900 census with their daughters.

Hi,
Ungkarl/Bachelor Tørres Olsen Sandvold left Skånevik Oct. 9. 1862, age 18, to work on farm Vig in Viganes (parish?)
Could be Vikanes local parish in Stord parish in Hordaland.

Tørres Olsen, bottom right page #15

Ah, the dreaded G=K conversion.... What might appear as "Viganes" is more likely indicating Vikøy (sometimes spelled Vikør), a parish in Kvam, Hordaland.

Further north along the Hardangerfjord- and ANOTHER area where the bygdebøker is available on LDS microfilm for inexpensive use.

1865 census -

Hopkins, you are really good,
this is the right Tørres Olsen. Olaf is local for Ole. He worked as a "tjenestekarl" servant

He went north by a ship up the Hardangerfjorden to Vikøy local parish in Kvam parish, see map

Tørris father was John Scharveland and Guris father Ole Sandvold.
Guri was christened Aug 13 1791, see next to the last on left hand page here and her parents are here
Tørris, his parents, and his first wife is here and Ingers death record is Febr 12 1809 here

The "Skåneviksoga", by Anders Haugland that you will want to check is on LDS microfilm #1440059, items 5-6. The volume copied to item 5 of that microfilm includes history and some family history of the people who lived on the Sandvoll (Sandvold), Skarvaland, Holmedal and Vik farms. I had a few scant minutes today and saw the names Marie L. Holmedal, Ole Tørresen Skarvaland, and Siri Knutsdatter Vik and they appear to list earlier family information for each of them - i.e. the names and vital dates of earlier ancestors and siblings.
I also noticed that listed under the Sandvoll/Sandvold farm there is a listed "subfarm" once called Berget and later known as Buo or Buen.

You should be able to quickly create at least an outline of many years of earlier family history from the Skånevik area and then take your time to go through the parish church records to get more detail and add to that outline as you wish.
Your nearest LDS Family History Center should be able to help you order the correct microfilm as I detailed above.

Wow you all have been busy. Thank you!

Kåre --Great Map! - The best I've seen of my area.

Hopkins -- Oh, Oh, - I got scolded for not checking LDS for microfilm and library for bygdebok yet. I haven't had a chance yet as we were in the flood disaster area that Pres. Bush declared. We've been digging out from a basement full of water. 761 homes in our town, 600 of them had some kind of water damage (some had 4 & 5 ft of water in basement). We don't even have a river in town but the town water system overloaded from the 12 inches of rain we got in 24 hours. One nearby town is almost completely destroyed. I'll get there eventually to check things out..

Eibache - Thanks for all the great info. I had not had a chance to get that far yet. I appreciate your time.

Recover from your current crisis situation. The books aren't going to disappear and they can wait. I don't mean to sound like I'm scolding but I have a natural tendency to sound like a teacher/librarian.
If you are not in a location convenient to an LDS Family History Center then consider borrowing that volume by Inter-Library Loan through your public library. A check of WorldCat indicates those Norwegian books are available at various libraries in the US including, US Library of Congress, Harvard University, St. Olaf College, Augustana College, University of ND, U of Minn, Family History Library (Salt Lake City) -- so you have an excellent chance that at least one of them would be willing to loan to your local library.

I'm hoping someone can decipher a couple of words for me.

Parish records for Hordaland. Skånevik 1815-1828, death records, page 97, line #26, 9/Dec/1817, Torris Johnsen Skarveland.
What is listed as occupation and what do remarks say?
He was born about 1779 but I haven't found the birth record yet, but I do have his marriage date of 24/Mar/1810. He died at about age 38 when his youngest daughter Inger was almost 1 year old.

His occupation was "gaardmand"- farmer, and the remark is "til kirke? aar 1818" - to church year 1818.
Tørris was a widower when he married in 1810, in the 1801 census he was married to Inger Amundsdatter and they had a 1 year old son John. Their wedding was July 7 1799.

Thank You!!

I thought it was probably gaardmand but wasn't for sure but I had no clue about the remarks. I appreciate you looking at it for me.

I did have the information on Inger and their son John.

Again, Thank you

Hi all,
I'm hoping someone can help me with some translation /handwriting issues. I have been looking for the actual parish birth/baptism record for someone and I'm having one heck of a time. I've looked several times, but end up quitting because I'm not finding it and just plain get too dizzy. I tried again today. I'm starting to see things upside down. ;)
I am looking for the parish record page for Torres Johnsen Skarveland. parents were John Torresen Skarvaland 1732(34) to 1806 and Kari Torbjornsdatter 1743-1806. I believe Torres was born in 1979 or 1972 and died in 1817. Can anyone give me details and date on the parish record page in Skaaanevik and the page # He was born in Skaanevik, Hordaland. His first marriage was to Inger Amundsdatter Tviet (1775 to 1809). His second marriage was to Guri Olsdatter Sandvold.
