According to the online emigrationrecords on "Digitalarkivet",
Ole Nicoalysen (Gangestad) with his family, emigrated on May 17th 1872 with the ship "Hero"

Their destination was "Fort Dogde" which I assume is in Iowa.
In 1880 the family is found in Humbolt county in Iowa.
But I am wondering about two things:
1. Where exactly is/was "Fort Dogde"?
2. When did the family arrive in NY?
I have found that the corrosponding ships with Hero ( according to the depaturedate is:

and last but not least. Where did they "go" after 1880? I think I might have found Ole and Inger ( the parents) in Howard county, but I have not access to the censusmaterial, so I cannot be sure.

Fort Dodge (correct spelling) is located in Humbolt County in Iowa. It is located in the central part of the state. Howard County is located more on the central eastern part of Iowa with the main cities of Cresco and Riceville. They are just west of the main norwegian community of Decorah, Iowa. I hope this helps you somewhat.

The city of Fort Dodge is actually in Webster County Iowa - just to the south of Humboldt County. Fort Dodge is the nearest "large" town or small city to Humboldt.
There were Gangestad (or similar spelling) families that lived in Humboldt County. Other IA counties nearby where Gangestad names are found in US censuses: Wright County (just east of Humboldt), and Emmet County (northwest of Humboldt County on the Minnesota border).
Hans E. Gangestad lived in Lake township of Humboldt Co. at the time of the 1920 US census - that is a little north of Norway township and the tiny town of Thor.
Many of the earlier Norwegian emigrants who settled in the Humboldt Co. Iowa area actually came to North America through Canadian ports like Quebec. Arrival in New York is less likely unless you have some information which specifies that port. |

I have no specific information that they went to NY. So Quebec might be a good alternative to NY.
There were other familys from Skjeberg who emigrated to the area. And some of these families used the "Gangestad"-name. ( Gangestad is several farms in Skjeberg.) Since there are multiple families who uses this name; I guess there can be some confusion.
But that said, the Hans E. Gangstad could be the younges son of Ole and Inger.

I found Ole and family in the 1900 census in Beaver, Humboldt, Iowa.
Ole b Feb 1831, Inger b Mar 1830, Christian (brother) b Aug 1822, Emil b Feb 1866, Olaf O b Aug 1869, Hans O b Feb 1872 married with a wife Elisa or Lisa b Feb 1878, and their daughter Ida b Sep 1882.
In the 1905 census I found Hans O with wife Elsie and children Elvin, Gladys (not sure what happened to Ida) also with Olaf and Emil. |

Those US censuses are interesting... Beaver township? Listed as plain as day for several decades! I grew up in the area and never heard of Beaver township in Humboldt Co. A Beaver Creek yes - it empties into the Des Moines River. Of course, a township may have been called that long before my time... but have undergone a name change.
Some sections of the 1910 US census for Humboldt Co. IA are completely illegible - so don't be surprised if quite a number of names never appear in the indexes for that year.
Some of the spelling variations of "Gangestad" name which can be found in Humboldt Co. records = Gangestad, Gangestead, Gangstad, Gangstead, even Garystead.

In the 1900 census for Dayton, Wright, Iowa: Nicolai b Mar 1856, Emma Everson b Jan 1859, Johan E b Feb 1882, Helena J b Nov 1884, Carl N b Nov 1887, Mary J b Apr 1891, Ellen J b Sep 1893, George A b Mar 1895, Clarence E b Feb 1898 and Joseph H b Feb 1898.
In the 1920 census for Eagle Grove, Wright, Iowa, is married to Emma age 60 with children: Johnny age 37, Ellen age 26, George age 23, Clarence age 21, Joseph age 21, and Morris age 18.
Looks like Nicolai is still alive in the 1930 census, but he was a widow, living with his son Maurice age 28 and his family: Florence, Melvin age 8, Kenneth age 2. Johan E age 48 is also living with them (divorced)
John Edward (Nicolai's son) was born 9 Feb 1884. Clarence Elmer and Joseph Helmer both born on 28 Feb 1898. Daughter Ellen married Clarence Larson by the 1925 Iowa census. Nora (not Mary) married Harry Doggett. Helena Josephine married Harold E King. |

It's a short drive from the town of Humboldt (in the center of Humboldt Co.) to the town of Eagle Grove in Wright Co. If you take "the back way" you'll pass right through the tiny town of Thor. If I were along for the trip - I'd be pointing to the old farm places where my own Olsons, Hansons, Petersons, etc. lived. Then I'd wonder if the Berhows, the Fevolds, the Lunds, the Guddals and the Mocklebusts were still living on their old family farms nearby. I'd probably make the driver stop at all the little Lutheran churches and the small graveyards.
The towns of Humboldt and Eagle Grove are about equal in size. Not big - probably still about 5-6000 persons living in each. I've lived in each of them in my youth and this entire subject brought a smile and fond memories. I don't get back to visit often enough.

I found some cemetery records for Hovey Cemetery in Brager, Iowa....
Ole N died 27 Aug 1919
Emil O died 1932
Severin (Johan) died 8 oct 1873
Christian (brother) died 12 Dec 1903 |

1910 Census Hans O age 38, wife Elsie age 32, Alvin M age 9, Gladys J age 7, Hazel E age 3 and Infant Lloyd E age 0.....brother Emil M age 44 is living with them in Beaver, Humboldt, Iowa. In the 1920 census Hans O has 2 more children....Charlotte age 7 and Florence age 5. Emil was not living with them in 1920...however, in the 1930 census, Hans and Elsie have 1 more girl, Dorothy age 6, and Emil M age 64, is living with them again...he was living with them in the Iowa State Census for 1925 also.
By the way, Hans's wife is Elsie Johnson: Parents are Elsie Braland born in Iowa and C Knute Johnson b abt 1842 in Norway. |

Inger died between 1900 and 1915. Ole was living by himself in 1915.
Otto b abt 1859 was widowed by 1925 and living with his daughter Ida age 31 in Webster, Badger, Iowa. |

| My name is Nicole Andrea Gangestad-Moore and I just started my Gangestad family tree. I'm stumped and hope that you can help me. Our last Gangestad trace is to Jens Severin Gangestad who also went by Sam Gangestad. He was born 9-9-1866 in Fredrickstad, Norway and arrived in America at the age of 4. I have no link to his parents . I'm the daughter of David Jon Gangestad whose father was Ernest whose father was Henry S. whose father was Jens aka Sam. |
