They emigrated 1843 from Atrå sub parish in Tinn parish in Telemark County, right hand, from farm Marum #24-31

Hølje (Helge) Sondresen Marum (Bakka) age 47 and his wife Aslaug Knudsdatter age 41.
Children: Sondre Høljesen Marum age 18, Liv Høljesdatter age 16, Knud Høljesen age 13, Margit Høljesdatter age 10,5, Østen Høljesen age 7, Helge Høljesdatter age 4.

Hølje is local for Helge.

Hølje Sondresen was from Bakka, Aslaug Knudsdatter was from Lofthuus when she married, they married in Atrå church June 30. 1826.
Bachelor Hølje Sondresen Bakka age 28 and maid Aslaug Knudsdatter Lofthuus age 22.
Best men: Gjermund Sondresen Bakka and Halvor Knudsen Daalen #7

Atrå in Tinn is located to the north-eastern part of Telemark County at Lake Tinnsjø

Østen was born in Tuddal sub parish August 12. 1836 in Hjartdal parish and municipality (south-west of Tinn) and bap. in Tuddal church on Sept.25. Østen was bap. at home the same day he was born
#11

Østen (Høljesen/Sandersen in USA) born to farmer Hølje Sondresen and houswife Aslaug Knudsdatter Hovde.
Godparents: Eli and Halvor Hovde, Knud and Margit Hovde, Gunnil Hans?datter.

It looks like they settled down in Tuddal for a periode, because both of Østen´s parents were born in Tinn, Hølje March 16. 1796 on Bakkejord and Aslaug in 1802 on Lofthuus.

Parish records for Tinn, Telemark that you'll be able to research in go back as far as at least 1717.
There are also published book(s) about the area that contain history and genealogy information - "Tinn-Soga", 2 volumes by H.H. Einung; "Tinns emigrasjonshistorie 1837-1907: En undersøkeles med saerlig vekt på den demografiske, økonomiske og sosiale bakgrunn for Amerikafarten, og en statistisk analyse av selve utvandringen", by Andres A. Svanlestuen.
There are also a number of persons with ancestry from Tinn that are very involved with the Telelaget group - http://www.telelaget.com/

Follow Hopkins instructions, its very exiting to make lookups for yourself in these church books.
Start with Østen´s sister Margit Høljesdatter christened oct. 2. 1832 in Atrå church.

Here is the Testing Forum if you want to share the links with us.

Is there a way to Download these images? Or to copy and paste? Or are they copyrighted?

I can print them but then they are to small to read and if I scan them to enlarge they are to blurry.
Thanks

Well.. I have looked at the links and get very frustrated that I cannot read Norwegian. It's all foreign to me! I wouldn't know that's what I'm looking for if I were starring right at it. The names are different than here in US and the birth years seem to be a couple years off.

I don't think any of these people knew how old they were when they came to the US.

I'm looking for the date Helen was born.

No wonder I can't find them on a ships list!

Thanks, Jodie

To copy fom a church book can be difficult, espesially if the girls are on the right page.
Reduse the image zize on top of the page, the problem is they are getting almost to small to red.
Perhapse someone can help you here, this isn´t acually "my table"

No wonder it can be hard to look for a person, sometimes the names changed a lot, and this family all changed to the fathers last name Sondresen (Sanderson) which was normal when they settled down in USA.
Traditional naming in Norway was used until about 1900,
an example:
If Østen Høljesen (Austin Sanderson) had stayed in Norway his son would have been Østensen and his daughter would have been Østensdatter.

Helge Høljesdatter (Helen Sanderson) was born on Marum in Atrå-Tinn Mai 22. 1839 and bap. June 20.
Parents Hølje Sondresen and Aslaug Knudsdatter Narum, RIGHT HAND #9
Godparents: Anne Olsdr. Bakka, Margit Gjermundsdater (Bakka), Gjermund Sondresen (Bakka), Ole Johnsen Sandvigen

I'll try and expain the Imaging process. I think Hopkins has the directions, which he always posts to help people.

I only use the English version.
When you have a digitised parish record open, their is a menu bar at the top which has a caption Image Information and a box that says None with a down arrow. Click on the down arrow and select On Top

Three URL address options will appear, as below:

Source information: Telemark county, Atrå in Tinn, Parish register copy nr. I 1 (1815-1850), Marriage records 1824, page 198.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=7938&idx_id=7938&uid=ny&idx_side=-137
Permanent imagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20061211340499.jpg

If you highlight and copy the top address, you can save the image to your computer files, which gives the parish info, dates, etc.

If you highlight and copy the second address, this will allow you to paste this image to another document, as it becomes a hyperlink.

The third address is used to copy the image to your computer, and can be filed to your image programs such as a Photo Gallery. If you try and hyperlink this one, the file is not permanent and will disappear. When you select this address, just hit Enter or Click on it, and it will disappear and come back as a reduced image, for you to enter into your computer by selecting the File menu. When you are done with this image, select the top left arrow, and you will be back where you started from.

They sailed on ship Argo via Havre and arrieved New York on July 26. 1843, passengers #31-38

Also passengers #49-57 and 114-115 was from Marum in Tinn.
The Sodresen family were also listes as Marum (Bakka), could be relatives.

Thank-you, Les,
I think I figured it out. I was wondering why it had a mind of it's own! Some things I could copy and some I couldn't! Hopefully this will work. Thanks again.

Thank-you Kare for the above info. With those names I was able to find the Ship List for them.

Thats perhaps why Hølje settled down on Marum, his older brother Østen Sondresen christened Nov. 8. 1789 inherit Bakka.
Østen Sondresen Bakka age 48, his wife Aase Olsdr age 43 and 7 children, Kari, Margit, Aagot, Helge, Sondre, Aase and Ole emigrated to USA in 1837, right hand #20-28

LDS records has both Østen Sondresen and Aase Olsdr died in Winter/Spring, Beaver Creek Settlement, Iroquois, Illinois in 1837 -38 (cant be -37). What happened to the children?
Have you ever heard of them?

Austin's obit states that his mother Adalaide Knutson had a brother living here when they came

No I haven't heard of an Iroquois County connection. YET... The family I am working on this for states that they have heard they have Native American in there somewhere but they don't know where or if it's true. Iroquois and Cherokee are the two Tribes mentioned. I always use LDS with caution. My own family is listed in there and in Rootsweb with faulse info. People seem to post things on assumtion without good solid source info.

I found them on a ships list in 1837 on Bark Niord. Østen dropped Sondresen and kept Bakka as a surname. So I am guessing from your posting above on LDS that he did keep the Sanderson surname?

Østen Sondresen Bakka age 48, would his US name be Austin?
Aase Olsdr age 43 Who would she be?
Kari, would she stay with Carrie?
Margit, would she be Margaret?
Aagot, ????????
Helge, would he stay Helge?
Sondre, would this be Sanders?
Aase ?????????????
Ole I'm assuming he would stay Ole?

Thanks, Jodie

Also I have another name but I don't have enough info yet to go on. If a US name was Baker. Where do you think they might oringinate from in Norway? All I have in Ole C Baker. Not much to go on. All I know is he was 4 to 6 years old when he came to US in between 1850 and 1852. I don't know who his parents are.

I always use other links with caution, more as a supplement.
The church records has the key, but not all records are listed.

Let´s see if we can take this family further back.
Sondre Bakka and Margit Østensdatter married 3. Sunday after Easter (April 16.) 1780 in Atrå, down page 2. from bottom #5
Atraa 5 Bachelor Sondre Gjermundsen Bakken and maid Margits Østensdatter.
Cautionister (guarantors): Niels Flaaten and Knud Luraas
The wedding (last column) was on Mai. 31.

Sondre Gjermundsen and Margit Østensdatter on Bakka in 1801, 7 children. Sondre was born about 1753 (no records available) and Margis was born about 1758. There were two subfarms under Bakka.

Sondre Gjermundsen Bakka died 1811 and was buried Mai. 23 in Atrå.
23. Maj Gravfested (Buried) Gaardmand (farmer) Sondre Gjermundsen Bakka died Mai 10. age 58, right hand down about 2/3

Margit was from Svalestuen in Atrå and was bap. Dominica 3. Ephiphan (Sunday Jan 7. or 1. Sunday after Hellige Tre Konger/Threee Wise Men) 1759
Østen Svalestuens and Kari Kittilsdatters Datter (Daughter) named Margit #6
