There were 9 Holtefarms in Øvre Eiker in 1900.
I cant find any of the Holte siblings in this census, the reason can be that they were dead, emigrated, moved to another parish.

Since the traditional naming was almost ended, it was more and more common to use the farm name as family name like it is in todays Norway.
Your Hans Peter Johannesen would have been Hans Peter Holte in 1900 if he had stayed.

Øvre Eiker has no historian books called Bygdbøker where all the farms and the people living there, as most municipalities has, are mentioned.
Øvre Eiker can because of that be very difficult for genealogy if someone don´t came across this topic and have the answeres.

Otto Samuelsen emigrated in 1908
He had obviously been "home" because he left Norway already in 1878

Hi Shari,
I think we may have a common ancestor, if you are a decendent of Mari Hansdatter Hals who was the daughter of Hans Nielsen Hals (1780-1854) & Ingebor Nielsdatter Wigen (1781-1849). My records show Mari born on 24 sep. 1814 (bap. 16 oct. 1814) & married to Johannes Pedersen Vendelborg on 3 dec. 1840.
Anne Hansdatter Hals (1811-1892) was my g-g-grandmother and older sister to the Mari above. Anne was married to Niels Pedersen Berg (later of the Spærren and Kjennerud farms). I am decendent of their son Hans Petter Nielsen Kjennerud who came to America in 1871. Hans & his wife (Charlotte) settled in Wisconsin for a time than moved to farm near Starbuck, Minnesota.
Let me know if you think they are the same Mari.

Dale,
The baptismal record for your g-g-grandmother Ane Hansdatter is #33
born March 27, bapt April 11 1811, parents Hans Nilsen and Ingeborg Nilsdatter, Store Hals. Witnesses were Kirsti Fosen, Povel Nilsen Wigen, Nils Nilsen Wigen, Hans Simonsen Smørgrav, Peder Christensen Kolberg.
It is quite clear that Ane and Mari were sisters.
Baptismal record for the first Mari of Hans Nilsen and Ingeborg Nilsdatter, Hals is #35
born April 10, bapt April 15 1813. Witnesses were Kirsti Nilsdatter Fosen, Povel Nilsen Wigen, Sten Mikkelsen Fosen, Anders Nilsen and Peder Christensen Hals.
Mari was burried Sept 24 1813.
The first son of Hans Nilsen and Ingeborg Nilsdatter, Hals was Nils, born Febr 15, bapt Febr 21 1808, see
#30
The second son was Hans, born July 10, bapt July 16 1809, see #30
The youngest daughter was Marte Kirstine, born April 2 and bapt May 8 1823, see females #62

Dale,
I don't know if you have seen the parish record for Nils Pedersen Berg (30 years) and Anne Hansdatter Store Hals (23 years) marriage on Jan 7 1834, but it is #7
Nils baptismal record is the next to the last one on left hand page
born Febr 18, bapt 1 Sunday in Lent Febr 27 1803.
You have probably seen the bapt. record for Hans Peter, but anyhow, it is #154

You were right Dale.

Do you have the records for Kjennerud?
Hans Petters wedding, emigration, siblings, what happened to Kjennerud after he emigrated etc?
If not I can bring them up here.

Happy New Year Eibache & All,

Many thanks for the information.
I have been researching my ancestors in Eiker for years and have created a website for my family that has info on Eiker that others may find helpful.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dfnels/index.htm

The Eiker farms my ancestral lines come from of Kolberg, Berg, Hals & Spæren had close family connections through the 1700's and my ancestors sprang from the Kolberg, Spæren, Loe, Kortvedt, Skalpe & Nesthorne farms in the 1600's.

One of the mysteries I have been unable to unravel and could use some help on is the individual, Peder Pedersen Berg. He was christened on 26 Dec. 1800 and the records give his parents as Peder Pedersen Berg (abt. 1749-1836) & Berthe Aasulsdatter Spæren (1753-1833). The problem is another Peder Pedersen Berg (my ancestor) was christened on 27 Dec. 1776, by the same Peder Pedersen Berg (abt. 1749-1836) & Berthe Aasulsdatter (1753-1833). During this period Peder Pedersen Berg (abt. 1749-1836) was referred to as “senior” and Peder Pedersen Berg (1776-1848) was referred to as “junior”, but I am not sure how Peder Pedersen Berg (1800-????) fits into the family. His 1800 christening has sponsers that would be reasonable if he was the son of Peder Pedersen Berg (1776-1848) and the 1801 census has him with the Peder Pedersen Berg (1776-1848) family.
I know Peder Pedersen Berg (1800-????) later married Berthe Maria Clausdatter Skara in 1830 and moved to the Spæren farm as did my ancestor Niels Pedersen Berg (1803-1866), who was the son of Peder Pedersen Berg (1776-1848) & Kirstine Nielsdatter Horne (1776-1853). This mystery Peder Pedersen Berg (1800-????) seems to disapear after the christening of son Peder Pedersen on 10 Apr. 1836 and I would like to know what happen to him.

Hi Kåre,
I think I have most of the records of the Kjennerud farms. The family stories tell of how Niels Pedersen had the Spæren & Kjennerud farms for a time and the boys (Hans Peter Nielsen, Johan Christoffer Nielsen & Carl Magnus Nielsen) would travel to work between the farms. The records indicate that Niels offically move to the Kjennerud farm not long before his death in 1866. The 1865 Kongsberg landdistrikt census has most of the family living on the Kjennerud farm, including the mother of my Anne Hansdatter Hals & Shari's Mari Hansdatter Hals.
Here is what I have on my Kjennerud family: (I have had some contact with decendents of Niels & Anne son Carl who took over the farm until he died. Oddly enough I know more about the family that stayed in Norway than I do about the brother & sisters of Hans Peter Nielsen (my g-grandfather) that came to this country.)

Kåre,
I have many dates & names of my family but it seems to be the family stories that fill the tree with color. One family story about Hans & Charlotte, is that Lottie was beautiful and known to sing in "mix company". Niels, the father did not approve of the wedding and sent Hans to America with an annual allowance.
The records show their marriage in Kongsberg on 21 May 1871 and their departure from Kristiania on the Anchor Line ship Scotia on 30 May 1871 bound for (I think) Kristiansand to Granton Dock to Glasgow. Their America arrival is at the New York Port on 9 June 1871, aboard the Anchor Line ship S/S Columbia bound from Glasgow.
The speed of the marriage and emigration goes along with the story of exile by the father.

also: "[bap.sponsers: Siri Pedersdtr.Aas, Ingebor Maria Hansdtr. Spæren, Hans, Simon & Anders Pedersen Berg]
Marianne Haagensdatters baptismal record is one of the nicest written ones I have seen, see left column, right hand page top record
she was born May 17 1848 and baptized June 11. parents Haagen Pedersen Spisholdt and his wife Maren Karine Thorstensdatter.
Have you seen Haagen Pedersens baptismal record, it is the 3rd from bottom of left hand page

I am impresed of your knowledge to these farms Dale.

Here is a map to show you where the farms are located south in the map.
Spe(æ)ren is located between Hokksund and Vestfossen not fare from from Haug church marked +.
Hals is at road nr 10 west from Vestfosen and Kjennerud is north of the road for Skollenborg close to the Eiker border marked _..._ in Kongsberg land district, todays Kongsberg.

From Sandsværs historie published 2001:
Hans Petter Nilsen Speren bought Kjennerud in 1862, he used the name Kjennerud in 1865 (this sale was published in 1873) and sold to his mother in 1871. In 1875 she lived "af sine Penge" from her capital and sold Kjennerud to her son Carl in 1880.
Carl also had a daughter Anna Regine born 1888, she died on Solstad nursing home in Sandsvær in 1958 and is buried in Kongsberg

Karoline Martine (Karlsdatter) Olafsen Kjennerud b. 1886, her daughter Olga Kjennerud b. 1924 married Kristoffer G. Pladsen 1921-1997 and recieved four places, Brennemyr, Buggeløkka, Kløfteløkka and Furumo from Olga.
Their children still live on this farm.

Kjennerud is coming from Kjenn/Tjern, a small forest lake and rud means to clear the land.
The lake is called Kjennerudtjern.
In 1705 Kjennerud belonged to the Silver mine company and was the kings property and the land was leased to small farmers.

The small lake "Kjennerudtjern" shall hide a silver treasure. In 1713 a thief was suposed to hide stolen silver in the lake kept in a bag. The rope broke when he came back to pick up the silver. Documents from 1713 support this story.

Interior from Kongsberg church were Hans Petter Nilsen and Charlotte Carlien married Mai. 21. 1871

One of the mysteries I have been unable to unravel and could use some help on is the individual, Peder Pedersen Berg.

I'll try:
Your Peder Pedersens baptismal record is the 3rd bapt. record on left hand page he was baptized Dec 22 (not 27) and he was born Dec 12.
In the census 1801 is the Peder born in 1800, he is the son of your Peder and his wife Kistine (Kirstine?) Nielsdatter.
The brother of Peder Pedersen of 1800 Niels born in 1803 was confirmed Oct 13 1816 and said to be 14 years - Niels being 3 years in 1801 must have died. See #14
Trying to find Peders confirmation record, I found a Peer Pedersen, Berg confirmed Oct 9 1814, said to be 14 years but unfortunately no parents are stated, see
#6
Again when Peder Pedersen Berg married Oct 19 1830 (29 3/4 years old) no parents are given, see #44.
The first son of Peder Pedersen and Kirstine Nielsdatter was born April 6 1799 (he was 3 years in the 1801 census but must have died 1801-1803).
I am quite confident that the parents of "Peder 1800" are Peder Pedersen and Kirstine Nielsdatter - first time I have seen that the baptismal record is wrong while the census is right.
