The above-mentioned is the illegitimate daughter of my grandmother's aunt Barbro Eriksdaughter. This Ragnhild came as a surprise - we have looked for Ragnhild Iversdaughter Einang, who was Barbro's legitimate daughter.

What I have found out about the illegitimate daughter, is that she was born in Røn, Vestre Slidre, Oppland, on January 12, 1865. Her father is mentioned as a Halvor Knutsen. Ragnhild was baptized in Slidre January 29, 1865, and her confirmation took place in the same county on May 23, 1880. She left Norway via Oslo/Kristiania on the Angelo on April 18, 1888, 23 years old. The ship was set for New York.

I do not know what happened to Ragnhild Halvorsdaughter Einang. Did she arrive in New York? Is it possible to trace her after that?
Yours sincerely,
Anne Benum

Fine! Because the transcriber is 10 years ahead of the original dates if his version is right - because, as I said in my entry, she was born in January 1865 and was 23 when she left Oslo.
Thank you. That was a step further on about her.
Hilsen Anne

Jo Ann's candidate is the best fit for the 1900 US Census. A search under Ragnhild, born in Norway 1865 +/- 2 years and immigraed in 1889 +/- 2 years turns up only four persons.

Hi,

Here is the marriage of Ragnhild and Matthias Kvam from the traill county marriages on usgenweb.com

Kvam, Mathias O. Bakken, Ragnild Jorgensen 13 Dec 1890 book 1, page 31

ND death index online:
STOCKSTAD, RAGNILD 07/24/1949 Sargent FEMALE 82 Years 05/06/1867 North Dakota Sargent

If Ragnhild can't be found as Ragnild, Rose is sometimes substituted.

Hilsen,
Jackie M.

Gosh - so many Ragnhilds! Thank you. I am just wondering: The Ragnhild Kvam who is mentioned several times in your answers: She left Norway in April 1888 - the emigrant-protocols are clear on that. How come her immigration-date is given as later - can she have given this information herself?
Hilsen Anne

Anne, yes she or someone in that household would have given the date to the census taker. So she or another person could have given incorrect information or the census taker could have writtten it down incorrectly. Or the information could be correct and none of the many Ragnhilds we have located are your Ragnhild. It would appear form the information that Jackie has provided in her post that Ragnhild Kvam is probably not your Ragnhild since it appears that her maiden name is Jorgensen not Halvorsdatter or Halvorsen or Einang as we would expect it to be.

Again as for Kari Nilsdatter we are trying out each of the possible Ragnhilds hoping to find one where all of the data fits what you know about Ragnhild.

A search using the spelling Ragnild and the same search parameters as used above for 1900 US Census does not turn up any good candidates. Three people turn up but none born in 1865.

Hi Anne,

In days gone by, the census taker would visit each home and write the responses to the questions on the schedules. Since her (transcribed)marriage record shows her marriage date as 1890, if that record is correct, then she must have been there in Traill county by 1890, regardless of the dates for immigration in the 1900 census as 1891. People's memories can be faulty, the census taker's hearing can be faulty, and the census taker could have written incorrectly etc. Lots of reasons for a census record to be only a version of the truth.

On the other side a transcribed record (like the marriage record) has several opportunities to go wrong as well. The original record may have been written in such a way as to defy interpretation, then the "collector" of the data may have recorded the data incorrectly or in a way which defied interpretation; or the the typist who put the e file together could have made a typo. Lots of ways for a transcribed record to be incorrect.

Ragnhild is a name which could be spelled many different ways. I've seen Ragna, Ragnild, Rogneil, Raneil, Raynel and then the name could have been transformed into a close English version like Rose or some such. On the marriage record her name was given as Ragnild Jorgenson Bakken. Is there any reason to think your Ragnhild might have carried her name like that?

And even though she came to US in 1888 or so, she might very well have been dead by the time of 1900 census. That record is a convenient one to begin with, since it covers the nation.

Lykke til
Jackie M.

Hi,

And maybe she never left New York. No age given for her...

From the Itallian Genealogical Group's database:

Halvorsen Ragnhild Jul 29 1900 4715 Kings H416
She married William Holcomb.

Hilsen,
Jackie M.

You are all so kind helping me with so much information. I think that a few of the dates are correct, but her father's name was definitely Halvor. Jackie: you could be right about her never leaving New York. Do you think it would be possible to trace eventual descendants from the marriage you mention?
Mange hilsener fra
Anne
