Here is the "online" North Dakota Death Index:

http://www.deathindexes.com/northdakota/index.html

You will find Ragnild there as I stated. The possibility that this is not her is very remote as her birth date is given as January 12, 1865. You can easily order a copy of her death certificate and it may list her parents names..

Ragnild Stockstad's and the other Ragnild's birthdates do not match Ragnhild H. Einang.'s.

Census records contain many errors/discrepancies, they were meant for statistical purposes, not for historical research a hundred years later. Even if immigrants spoke English they had heavy accents and be misunderstood by a census taker. Her immigration dates on the census are very close to when she came over.

If she got married in 1900, son Henry was not William Holcomb's son. A death record on the Italian site is:

Raguheld Holcomb, died NY May 12, 1916, age 44, (1872)..

Finding her in the 1900 census would help because it would give her month and year of birth, I have been unsucessful, I did find William F. Holcomb, single, born West Virginia in Brooklyn.

I think Jo Anne meant 18 July 1926 for the Death Date of Ragnhild Kvam.

It may be that Ragnhild Kvarm is the Ragnhild in question but we do have the issue of her marriage listing, listing her as Ragnhild Jorgenson Bakken. See below

Kuhlmann, Henry Krageas, Amelia 29 Jun 1892 1 185
Kvale, Ole J. Simle, Ida 19 Jun 1895 2 159
Kvam, Mathias O. Bakken, Ragnild Jorgensen 13 Dec 1890 1 31
Kvermen, Reier O. Stavedalen, Olea A. 17 Nov 1888 B. 59
Kyllo, Swert O. Rostad, Olive J. 07 Nov 1887 B. 6

Hi,

In the Galesburg Centennial Book 1882-1982 there is a short little bio (page 260) with picture of the Mathias Kvam family. The Kvam family (that is Mathias, his siblings and parents)came from Dovre, Norway. Not so much information on Ragnhild is included. Willie and Myrtle are listed as adoptive children of Matt and Ragnhild. Myrtle married a man named Art Svegaarden. Ragnhild died in 1926 (as we know) and Matt died in 1937.

So then I looked in both the Galesburg book and Prairie Portraits: A History of Clifford, North Dakota for any Bakken family information. There was a story in each book about a man named Iver Bakken. The Clifford book had the most interesting detail about him...

Iver Bakken was born on 20 Dec 1889 in Norway and it says, " He came to Matt Kvam's in 1911." Iver went back to Norway for a visit and married a woman named Ingeborg (no last name given) om 1950. Then Ingeborg and Iver came back to the Clifford area and Iver died in 1984.

It is possible that Iver is related to Matt Kvam but equally possible that he is connected to Ragnhild. Does the name Iver Bakken ring a bell???

Here is the free snippet of the obituary of Ingeborg Bakken found in the Grand Forks Herald on newslibrary.com:

Grand Forks Herald (ND) - February 29, 1988

OBITUARIES INGEBORG BAKKEN
"Ingeborg Bakken, 81, rural Galesburg, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1988, in Union Hospital, Mayville, N.D.Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Norman Lutheran Church, Clifford N.D. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Baker Funeral Home Mayville.Ingeborg Soholt was born Oct. 21, 1906, in Soholt, Norway, the daughter of Hans and Olina Soholt. She grew up there and on Dec. 20 1949, married Iver Bakken in Soholt. She joined her husband in the United States and they..."

Could someone with Ancestry look for Iver Bakken in the WWI draft reg records to see if he is listed and if he got the form which contains information about "nearest" relative? Thanks

Hilsen,
Jackie M.

Thank you all. I will ask for a death certificate for Ragnhild in New York - I have gone through the procedure previously with my family in North Dakota/Minnesota. As I have said before, you are all very kind and helpful. I am really indebted to you all.
Mange hilsener
Anne

Thank you. By the way: I am off for holiday in the mountains of Slidre (!) now - I'll be gone for three weeks, so I won't be able to answer any postings.

Hi,

Mathias Kvam was interviewed during the 1930s as part of the WPA Pioneer Biography File (found in Traill County) and he makes a few statements about his late wife Ragnhild.

!. Her maiden name was Ragnhild Bakken. she was born in 1865 in Gudbrandsdalen, Norway, her nationality was Norwegian and she came to the U.S. on a "steamer." She died in August 1926.

2. Neither her brothers nor her sisters came to Dakota.

3. Her brother and sisters are named Hans Bakken, Mrs. Iver Skeum, and Anna

$. Ragnhild and Mathias' children were Willie Kvam, who is dead and Myrtle Mrs. Archie Svegaarden of Clifford, N.D.

The dates this project encompassed were 1936-1940. Matt Kvam is reported as having died in 1937.

Hilsen,
Jackie M.

Hi,

Yes all the others need exploration.

The Ragnhild with the exact birthdate match in Traill appears to not be the "right" one, since she apparently came from Gudbrandsdal. The Iver Bakken came from Lesja and there is a Ragnhild born on 11 Jan 1865 on Bakken, a husmandsplass, in Lesja. The negative side of that is that her father is not Jorgen but Peder and the brothers and sisters with the family in 1865 contain no Hans nor Anna.

Hilsen,
Jackie M.

Well, I found the husband Gilbert P Sandbakken in the North Dakota Death Notice web site but not her not even under any of the three names. See below for Gilbert P Sandbakken died Aprl 1, 1944.

Hi,
Here is Ragnhild in the North Dakota Death Index:

Name (Last, First Middle) Date of Death County of Death Gender Age Date of Birth State of Residence County of Residence Action
SANBAKKEN, RAGNHILD 06/12/1950 Ramsey FEMALE 86 Years 12/31/1863 North Dakota Ramsey

Ragnhild is buried with her husband and son Julius in the Hoff Lutheran Cemetery in Clara Township, Nelson County, N.D.

Here is the snippet obit in the Grand Forks Herald of one of her daughters:

Grand Forks Herald (ND) - September 3, 1992

She moved to Gronna Good Samaritan Home, Lakota, in August 1988.Survivors are her son, Arnold, Devils Lake;..."

And here is an "Adolph Sandbakken" from the Minnesota death index online, may be the son in the census records, in which case mother's maiden name is recorded as Lilligren..:
