Hi

I am researching my great-great grandfather Kristian HANSEN and his father Hans Elias COLBENSEN's family history and need some help deciphering/translating and interpreting the hand written marriage entry from 1873 which I finally found in the Digital Archives parish register for Oslo Domkirke here:

Parish register (official) nr. 21 (1865-1884), Marriage records 1873, page 195
Permanent imagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20060215030693.jpg

This shows he was born on 10 June 1834 and is also the only record I have of his father.

Although I found a list of all the standard column headings and a dictionary with basic words translated I am having trouble identifying the place of birth/residence and some of the notes about him being a widower and having to get royal permission to marry his second wife Randi Andersdatter (I found her in the 1865 census for Lier).

The story goes that Kristian was a sea-captain and was probably in the navy or merchant navy.

In 1881 they had a daughter Victoria Hansen who died in England in 1885. I have found census records of him in London, where he died in 1895. This shows that he an Randi were by then British subjects - I don't know how this process of naturalisation would have happened? And there is a big gap between 1873 and 1881. I have not been able to find this Victoria's birth records in England (they also had another daughter called Victoria who also died).

However these UK records and the other birth and death certificates I have have Kristian's occupation as Ship's Carpenter, Ship Chandler, ShopKeeper and Ironmonger so maybe he was retired by then?

I would really like to find his Norwegian navy or merchant navy records but understand to do that I need to know where he was born. Reading the handwriting is a bit more of a challenge when you are also unfamiliar with possible place names. And there are lots of [ck][h]ristian Hansens in the digital archives!

Anyway - any help anyone can give would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Chris H.

The marriage record lists Kristian Hansen as born in Herad, Spind annex (Vest-Agder). I'm having trouble with connecting to the scanned record collection at the moment or I'd be searching for his birth/baptismal record there approximately 10 June 1834. Perhaps someone else can connect successfully and find that record.

(Sharing the permanent page link is often more helpful because it will allow us to fully use the zoom capabilities of the pages. The image link is good, the permanent page link is better.)

This may be Kristian/Christian Hansen with his first wife in Oslo/Kristiania for the 1865 Norwegian census. It lists this man as born in Spind (Vest-Agder) and working as a "Styrmand" or ship's mate, coxswain.
1865 in Olslo/Kristiania

Their address, Smalgangen street, the census lists as within the district for the Grønlands Menighed (church congregation).

Thank you all so much already!

I posted this before going out to dinner and just got back to find all this amazing information!

Sorry about that - the permanent pagelink to their record is: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=663&idx_id=663&uid=ny&idx_side=-202

Kristian's first wife Karen must have died some time between 1865 and 1873 then..

I will take some time tomorrow to look at all of this -- I am descended from Kristian's son Victor who emigrated with his mother from London to NZ in 1906.

Thanks again

Thank you again eibache and hopkins for this - I never expected to get so much detail so quickly nor to be able to trace the generations so far back.

This is all very interesting and exciting for our family as we had very little information on this paternal line through Kristian's son Victor Hansen before now. I was able to look up where he was born on a large scale map of Norway I bought recently and would love one day to be able to visit.

After digesting this a little I do have a couple more questions:
i) on Kristian Hansens/Randi Andersdatters marriage certificate (permanent page link above) can you also help me to identify where they were living at the time it looks to me something like Röafijerg no 2, not sure if it is a street name or farm name... (the reason I would like to know this is so I can search the appropriate parish register for their first daughter Victoria Hansen's birth/baptism record in about May 1881 - assuming they had not moved).

ii) I found Kristian's first wife Karen's death record here in 8-Aug-1868 (Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=627&idx_id=627&idx_listetype=bg&idx_kjonn=&uid=ny&idx_side=-126
), which has her residence as per the census link above in Smalgangen street, but am not sure what the annotation below her name translates to, nor can I identify the cause of death.

iii) from what I understand to find Kristian's military/maritime records the district office where they are likely to be kept should be one close to where he was born i.e in Herad, Spind annex (Vest-Agder), from what I read he would have joined up when he was about 16 or so in 1840

Once again thank you for your help, it is very much appreciated.

They were living in Rødfyldgaden 2, a drawing of the street (No 10 - 20 or so) is here
She died of tuberculosis and the annotation is (gjenl. Mand og 1 Barn) - survivors husband and 1 child.

Thanks ebaiche, its great to see the drawing of what the area looked like - I presume it has been redeveloped now.

- I will start searching for Victoria baptism record for 1881 in the local parish register
- I will have a look to see if I can find their child and what happened to it after she died as our family has had no record of Kristian having any other children until now

On my large scale Norway map I found two places called Helle one in Aust-Agder north of Kristiansand and the other further to the west in Telemark, my guess is that it is the one in Aust-Agder but I think I read somewhere that the county boundaries and names have changed slightly over the years?

Also I was wondering what the place names or occupations of the witnesses on Kristian and Randi's marriage certificate were?

Finally I have to thank you and hopkins again for your help - without it our family may never have known any of this info.

There are no place names associated with those witnesses. Yes, occupations, just as the column heading instructs.

They read "Kontorbetj." which must be the writer's abbreviation for kontorbetjent.

Find that word in the online translation list at:

There is a difference in Kristians occupation "kontorfullmektig" - clerical officer and that of the witnesses at the wedding "kontorbetj" = kontorbetjent - clerk.

The Helle that you want to see is in Vest-Agder (Spind no longer exist as a separate parish - today you should look in Farsund) - may I suggest that you use this map - søk = search for Helle and choose "sted/adresse" (on the left side) - among the "helles" that come up choose Helle (Gårdsbruk) Farsund, Vest-Agder which comes up on "page" 3, - zoom in/out for details or where it is on the southern coast of Norway.

Helle is 7 km north-west of Korshavn, where I live. There is a new tourist resort there now Farsund Resort . It is called Bjørnevåg, but I think the western (left) part of it is built on Helle ground. map
