Rekvoldsen: am seeking information on Hans Olaus Rekvoldsen and his father Peter, which relates to a forum trail I found yesterday from Cath Davies and Hazel Jones (and whoever else is out there!) linking in to the Rekvoldsen/ Drennan family trees. My great grandmother was Walburg Drennan (nee Rekvoldsen), born 1.1.1873, in Liverpool and died 9.1.1957, probably a common ancestor to you Cath, I think we must be distant cousins if you’re still following this trail. Walburg’s father was Hans Olaus Rekvoldsen (estimated born 1842 or 1843) who married Margaret McKinley (reputedly from Belfast). I’ve just got their marriage cert for 15 Jan 1868 which names his father as Peter Rekvoldsen, a mariner. I’m hoping that those with the Norwegian links can give me some info on this father and son, perhaps where they were born, their roots, when they left Norway, etc. I know Hans died of consumption here in Liverpool in 1894. Looking at the previous trail, Hans’s father does not seem to be Peter but perhaps called Reichvald Helgesen so how does his son end up as Hans Olaus Rekvoldsen? Hope you can help -Paula

Hans Olaus was born Nov 29 (or Nov 24) 1841 and baptized Oct 2 1842, see #60 His parents were sailor Rikvold Helgesen and Catrine Olavusdatter who were also the parents of Walborg Elisabeth, see #56 ref posting of 21/07/2008 : 05:33:45 in this topic (When Walborg Elisabeth was baptized her father had left her mother.)

Thank you for the quick responses. There’s a lot of stuff here with the Nilsen link from before. Still a bit curious why Peter (Rekvoldsen) appeared as the father’s name on Hans’s marriage cert- any thoughts? Do the names Rekvold and Helgesen have any particular meanings? Its all fascinating and hope you don’t mind me asking some more…can you access any more info on Hans’s parents Rekvold Helgesen & Anne Cathrine Olavesdr (Olavusdattar) or grandparents Helge Eriksen & Marthe Rejersdatter, where marriages took place, possibly where & when they died? Did Helge and Marthe have many children? It’s an interesting transition from being servants (what is Gisle Nordre?) and becoming sailors. Many thanks Paula

I guess Hans would be the only one to answer that question, maybe it was easier to write/pronounce Peter. Reichwald/Rikvald/Rekvold name originating from german language. Helgesen = son of Helge, Helge a common name in Norway.
Gisle Nordre = farm in Asker, Akershus, Norway (Gisle north) |

this marriage record is from the parish register in Halden, Østfold, Norway.
Ancestors for Anne Cathrine to be found in Sweden, it was not uncommon that persons from Strømstad came to Halden for work.
Helge Eriksen and Marthe Maria Rejersdatter were married in Asker, Akershus, Norway. Helge born approx 1781 and Marthe born approx 1779. |

Many thanks for all this info Eibache. I think I must have gone off on a bit of a wild goose chase before, because I’d found a Peder Richvoldsen and was assuming this was the thread. This Peder was born in Asker, Akershus to Richvold Pedersen and Anne Andreasdr in August 1822… I suppose you’re going to say they’re not related to Hans Olavus Reichvaldens…? GW Paula |

Thanks for all the info to date. If I can ask a little more- do you have any info on Hans's bro Rudolph Rekvoldsen? I know he was christened Jan 1848- do you know his date of birth? Also I don't know what happened to him (unlike his sister and brother who came to Liverpool). Do you have a death record for him? Finally the Norwegian census listings- not quite sure when they were held but do you have one or two for the Rekvoldsen family in Halden showing their names and address and including Hans? This census record would need to be at some date between November 1841 and January 1868 when Hans married in Liverpool. Anything on this would be great. Thank you Paula

Thanks for all your help- it has made a great difference to learn more about the Norwegian side of my mother's family. Is it possible to email the other 3 who were exploring their Rekvoldsen heritage on the previous forum on the same topic, in order to contact them separately to the forum? Good wishes to you and your colleagues who work on the forum...you're stars! Paula |

Hello again. Have found another possible link to Hans Rekvoldsen's mother. It's Britta Christine Hjerpendahl who married Petter Amundsen on 4 April 1836 in Halden. I assume this is the sister (or mother?) of Anne Cathrine Olavusdr (whose father is Olavus Hjerpendahl). Is this right? If so was she still there in the 1865 census as well? Any pointers would be helpful. Thank you. Paula |

As noted in the marriage records Britta Christine was born in Strømstad approx 1816 and Anne Cathrine was born in Strømstad approx 1818, Olaus/Olavus Hjerpendahl was the father of both - they were most likely sisters. Britta Christine is not in the 1865 census. |
